Gravel Bike #58 – Author Ronin – Kingdom of Cold and Ice – Happy New Year 2024 -30°C vs -53°C

Snow Goggles – Terror Snow Degender [Music Piano] I’m currently wearing a snowboard mask from the Russian brand Terror Snow. If I hadn’t had a snowboard mask on my face, I would have already died from the cold.

Without a snowboard mask, tears would immediately appear in my eyes in such cold weather. And the tears would quickly turn from the state of water into the state of ice and I would not be able to ride a bicycle with frozen eyes.

Since I have a snowboard mask on my face, which protects my face and eyes from the wind and cold, I can ride my bike in such cold weather. It is very cold outside. That’s horrible! The wind blows off the bike lane.

You should close your mouth and not talk while riding a bicycle because cold air enters your mouth while riding. Teeth freeze quickly and then they will hurt. So I shut my mouth and continue cycling in silence. Two Thousand Twenty Four. Let’s go! To TV tower. And then the opera house.

This is our beautiful television tower. Previously, our TV tower did not have a backlight and it was ugly. Since March 15, 2018, the TV tower has been illuminated in different colors. I don’t know how to properly take a video to show the backlight of the TV tower. So beautiful. Cold! I’m moving on.

I hope that 4 batteries are enough for me to operate the SONY X3000 camera to make a video of Friendship Square. There is a New Year tree on Friendship Square.

Then I need to ride a bicycle to the central square and make a video of the central New Year tree in our Kingdom of Cold and Ice. I’ll ride my bike further. On the right side are dandelions (New Year’s illumination).

A multi-colored building that may be banned if the lighting does not have 7 different colors. There should be 7 different colors. 6 different colors are prohibited by Russian law. Now I’m going to the pink building. This is the only pink building in the city.

This is an art gallery building. If I’m not mistaken. This is the building. It’s very beautiful. This building in the distant past was approximately the same as it is now. Over time, the building was destroyed. Some architect decided to restore this historical building.

Make this building as close as possible to the historical architecture that was in the construction project. This building is very beautiful. This building is very different in architecture from all other buildings in the city. And this building is the hallmark of our city. Very nicely done. I really like this building.

I like this building not only because of the pink color, but also because of the architecture itself. I’ll come closer. This is a red carpet (natural carpet). We have carpets on the steps (staircases) almost everywhere, because it is slippery in winter. This is the Gallery of Foreign Art of Professor Gabyshev.

This is the correct name for this building. Very beautiful and I really like it. I took many beautiful photographs near this building. The building has a good appearance. You can still take beautiful photos here. This is such beauty in the city center. I’m walking down the red carpet.

A real carpet made from natural materials. And not from artificial materials. On the right is the State Opera and Ballet Theater. Old Soviet building. A very beautiful theater building. Now I’ll stop my bike and show you our Opera and Ballet Theater. There is very interesting architecture here.

The building is very beautiful. It decorates our city. I continue on my bike. I’ll go down the slope to the New Year’s tree. Hello! Hello! Children are walking in such bitter cold.

I won’t be able to ride a bike down the slope here, since the snow is soft and cars are parked close. You can hit the car. So I go downstairs on foot. Only Japanese cars. Look! An icicle from a car’s exhaust pipe.

The car is parked with the engine running (on). The result is condensation, which causes an icicle to appear on the exhaust pipe of the car. So! This is our first New Year tree today. Christmas tree with a beautiful red star. I love these trees. This is Friendship Square.

All that was left was to bike about 1 kilometer along the bike path, which was covered with snow. And then I’ll ride my bike to the central square. This is a Christmas tree. The moon is shining from above. This is a bicycle.

And here, under the lighting, now let’s look at the mercury thermometer. It’s -30°C outside. I held the mercury thermometer a little with a warm hand, so it warmed up and showed above -30°C. The actual air temperature is -30°C. Very cold. That’s why the bike is already frozen. I’m going to the next tree.

There is snow on the branches of the trees, not from frost. This is the snow that fell a long time ago, but has already melted due to temporary warming of the weather. When there will be a real frost of -40°C… In the coming days they forecast -40-45°C.

At -40°C it will be a completely different nature. All objects (tree branches, fences, lamp posts, road signs) will be covered with a large layer of snow (snow coat).

And now I’m already shooting video on the third battery (2 batteries are already frozen and don’t work). We need to ride a bicycle to the second New Year tree.

In such cold weather, one battery lasts about 15 minutes. Then the battery doesn’t work. The SONY X3000 camera itself works at -30°C without problems. But batteries freeze quickly in such weather (Caution! Do not use batteries in such cold weather because the battery may explode).

Perhaps if you insulate the camera body, the battery will last longer. But then it will be difficult to replace batteries. I don’t know how to insulate the camera so that the camera remains comfortable to use. If the camera is heavily insulated, it will be difficult to replace a frozen battery with another.

Cat (this is the nickname of the cyclist), look. I met your friend. I met a cat. But this is not a real cat, this is Bob Cat (tractor) :). Turns out this isn’t the original Bob Cat. It’s a pity! Our cycling club loves cats (our cycling club is called the Forest Gang).

Even in this cold, tractors clear the snow on the bike path. It is very comfortable to ride a bike in a snowboard mask. You cannot ride a bike in cold windy weather without a snowboard mask.

Previously, there was no wind in our city and in winter there was severe cold up to -70°C and calm. And now there are constantly strong winds. The winds are strong like in St. Petersburg. Only in St. Petersburg it is hot in winter, and in Yakutsk it is very cold.

Often you have to wear a lot of clothes to avoid freezing. But if the clothes do not have protection from the wind, then the person will freeze very much and may die on the street.

In our city in winter you need to dress very warmly. You need to dress so hard as if you are going out into the deadly cold, which could easily kill you. I currently have SAGA snowboard gloves on my hands, in which my hands do not freeze at an air temperature of -30°C.

But at temperatures of -40°C and -45°C, my hands in these gloves will quickly freeze so much that I will have to cut off my hands due to frostbite. For air temperatures below -40°C, other gloves (mittens) are needed.

I have other fleece gloves in my backpack. I use these fleece gloves when I take photographs. Your hands freeze faster in them, but these gloves are thin and comfortable to press buttons on the camera with.

When I’m done taking photos, I take off my thin fleece gloves and put them in my backpack. Then I put SAGA snowboard gloves on my hands and ride the bike with snowboard gloves on, as they keep my hands warmer. They cleaned the snow off the bike path very well here.

There’s a little bit of cycling left. Now I will ride under the luminous arch, under the glowing numbers 2024. And then I will ride my bicycle to the central New Year tree of the city.

There is a strong wind outside and a bitter cold of -30°C. And children walk in the city square and take New Year’s photos. Children walking with a dog. The dog is also wearing warm clothes so as not to freeze. In such cold weather, everyone needs to wear warm clothes. Both people and animals.

This illumination creates a New Year’s mood. My bike ride is coming to an end. And I have a question for Shimano. Shimano employees, answer my question: Why is this happening? SRAM hydraulic brakes, which use DOT 4 and DOT 5.1 brake fluid, freeze and stop working at temperatures of -30°C.

And Shimano GRX 400 hydraulic brakes, which run on Shimano Hydraulic Mineral Oil (SM-DB-OIL), do not freeze at temperatures of -30°C and continue to work in such cold weather. What is the secret of Shimano brakes? 15 years ago, absolutely all Shimano hydraulic brakes froze and did not work at temperatures of -30°C.

Previously, Shimano did not have such hydraulic brakes that could operate at temperatures of -30°C.

Therefore, in the past, many cyclists who cycled in winter at temperatures down to -30°C always bought SRAM hydraulic brakes. Because SRAM brakes run on DOT brake fluid. DOT holds up better in cold weather than the old (15 years ago) Shimano mineral oil.

But DOT brake fluid does not work at temperatures of -30°C or even colder. That is, at temperatures between -30°C and -50°C, DOT brake fluid freezes. And these are Shimano GRX 400 hydraulic brakes. I accelerate on a bicycle at a temperature of -30°C. I ride my bike up to the beautiful ice sculptures.

And I press the pistols (I press the brake levers). And the bike stops instantly. Shimano GRX 400 hydraulic brakes operate at temperatures of -30°C and do not freeze.

I don’t know what the secret of Shimano’s new mineral oil is, but this new mineral oil does not freeze at temperatures down to -35°C and Shimano GRX 400 hydraulic brakes work in cold weather.

I am very pleased with Shimano! (they made cool hydraulic brakes that work in extreme cold in the coldest city on the planet) These are ice sculptures that were made for the New Year holiday.

There are a lot of ice sculptures here. I will make a video of all the ice sculptures on my Sony Xperia 5 II smartphone. I’ll take a few photos of the central New Year tree and that’s all. Ice Sculptures [Music Khomus*] *Khomus – yakutian musical instrument -50°C, December 2023 -53°C, December 31, 2023

Today is December 31, 2023. The last day of the passing year (last day in 2023). It is very frosty (cold) outside. -53°C Very cold! There are practically no people on the street. In such frost, it is better to stay at home and not leave the house.

By the time you watch this video, January 1st, 2024 will have already arrived. Therefore, I wish everyone a Happy New Year! And also happy Christmas (in Russia, Christmas is January 7) and happy Old New Year (in Russia, the Old New Year holiday is at night from January 13 to 14).

These are the last videos for this year (in 2023). See you again in 2024! I wish everyone happiness and that 2024 will be better for all of us than 2023!
