300 KM Roller Coaster Bike Ride! | Audax Subic 300 KM Ride Recap (ENG/FIL SUBS)

As beautiful as it was before, it’s as painful right now. Wooh, Suffering! Why? Why am I doing this? Why am I paying a registration fee, to suffer and have problems? Audax is not a race with a prize. So why do we do this?

Good morning! We are in Subic today for the Audax 300. This is my second time participating in the Audax Subic 300 KM. I joined last year and finished in 15 hours and 59 minutes. This 2023, I just want to finish while the sun is still up. Can I do it? Let’s see later.

But before I start my story, have you subscribed to Jangan Bikes? If you love bike adventures, trips and tips, like and subscribe here so you can be the first to see my new videos. And follow me on Jangan Bikes on Instagram and Tiktok. Mango Valley 5 is our hotel for Audax this year.

The pre-ride check in was also done right in the hotel lobby. Since we were a large group, we got what looks like a 3-bedroom unit with a living room where we parked the bikes. It’s a really good set up if there are a lot of you

Because you can hang out together and fix bikes in the living room. If you want to book this too, just remember that it is not an actual 3-bedroom hotel room unit. These are three Double Rooms that share a living room that also has its own door.

You need to tell the booking staff to put your group here. If you can’t get all three rooms here, you might have share the space with someone else. After pre-ride check in and settling into the room, we had a shake out ride to Subic Airport.

We did this to stretch the legs and see if anything needed to be fixed on the bikes. You’ll see later why it’s really important to know if there’s a problem with your bike before a big ride. Audax is not a race. Carmela Pearson: It’s not a race! Carmela Pearson: It’s not a race!

Because we all want to promote responsible cycling. We should come back to our loved ones in one piece. But, even if it’s not a race you just have to finish within the cut-off time of 13.5 hours for 200 KM and 20 hours for 300 KM.

And the participants’ times are still ranked when the results are released. So for others, it’s enticing to ride the Audax fast especially if you can get the record time in each course. The 300 KM route is simple: Ride from SBMA (Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority), heading north along the entire length of Zambales

Until reaching Dasol, Pangasinan. Then turn around, and return to SBMA. For 300 KM we have four checkpoints to pass: first, at KM 51.7 in Cabangan, Zambales second, at KM 150.5 in Dasol, Pangasinan third, at KM 195.5 in Masinloc and the last checkpoint, at KM 248.3 in Cabangan again.

Five of us rode together for the 300 KM route: me, Carlo Paolo , Ralph and the Trangko ng Bayan, Hidde. We all plan to stick to Hidde until we can because we know we’ll go a long way and we can reach it quickly, inside his “Kulambo” (mosquito/protective net).

He is always in front, so he is Trangko (literally translates to “Stanchion”) ng Bayan. You’ll see his Audax time later in this video. And we’re off to a quick start. We went ahead of a lot of cyclists in the first climbs out of the towns of Olongapo and Subic. Arriving at Castillejos,

We were pedaling at a speed of 30-35 kph. And we were getting the most out of Kulambo ni Hidde™. Whenever I look at my power output, I only pedaled 100-140 watts, Zone 1 to Zone 2 power. While my heart rate was in Zone 2 to 3.

So I thought about it, it looks like I can last here. All right, keep going. It’s funny how I found out that Hidde was Trangko ng Bayan: when we got to a bridge under construction, there were suddenly so many people ahead of us from behind. That’s how long our train was that morning.

Carlo: The bus in front is like a Pace Car. This is not a race! Carlo: This is the neutral start! Okay, go! We arrived early at the first checkpoint in Cabangan at 5:55 AM. We just got some water and ate a little before heading back to Masinloc.

We just finished the first checkpoint of 300 Hidde: Are you shooting a video? That’s Hidde, our stanchion! Hidde: Hahaha Trangko all the way. We just finished the first checkpoint. We arrived before sunrise. Time check: 6:01 AM I don’t know if you can see, but there are a lot of birds flying today. Nice.

The morning is beautiful. But maybe it won’t be so good this afternoon. I’m already here at Masinloc. And Hidde and Ralph went ahead. It’s OK. We’ll wait for each other at the gas station, the 200 KM turnaround point. We’ll just refill (water) there because it’s not a 300 checkpoint.

Even if that climb was a punishment, the view is beautiful! The view is beautiful this morning. We arrived at the Masinloc checkpoint at 9:34 AM to get water again and eat a little. This is not a checkpoint today for those participating in the 300 KM. Later when we return from Dasol.

We are at the Masinloc checkpoint. But, we will not scan here for 300. Here the 200 KM riders will scan. We just get water and then we continue to Dasol. (Your STI) moved when you crashed? Ralph: Yes. I had a problem with my rear tire: it lost pressure.

So I pumped it up first. And Hidde, Ralph and Paolo went ahead. Now I’m with Carlo and we’re riding in this big group with just the right pace. Let’s see if we can catch up with them. *Funeral 1* Several groups joined us until

We were swallowed up by a peloton with more than 20 cyclists. *Funeral 2* It was good that we were with them because it was here that the wind started to pick up and we were hidden inside the big group. There is also a peloton being organized

So that the participants can take turns at the checkpoint in front. They also did not let the peloton go faster than 28 kph so everyone would stick together. About 10 KM from the Dasol checkpoint we ran into the first two in the 300 KM ride.

They were going so fast to come back at that time. We reached Dasol checkpoint at 9:35 AM. Here we will turn around to return to Subic. Hey! You are still here. Nice. We still caught up with Hidde, Ralph and Paolo here, but they were already leaving.

This is what I say is like a Party Checkpoint because there is music, someone is handing out beer and other items being given here. After leaving the checkpoint, Carlo and I were joined by Jam, a teammate at Rapha Cycling Club Manila. We pedaled 27-29 kph back.

But I was surprised when I saw Paolo on the side of the street and the bike was upside down. He looked like he had a big problem with the tire and we let Jam go ahead. Paolo got a big sidewall tear and his tubeless sealant couldn’t seal it.

We first remedied with tire boot sticker and inner tube. We also met Sham here who flew in from Singapore to participate in the Audax 300. I understand though, because this Singapore Real RTI (Round The Island) Route is only 167 KM. After Paolo’s tire was remedied, we left together but soon parted ways.

Our remedy lasted for about 10 KM until his tire lost air pressure again. He walked to find a vulcanizing shop to get it fixed. He first found a motorcycle shop. And the mechanic there, Junnard, offered to take Paolo to the nearest vulcanizing shop on his motorcycle while Paolo carried the bike.

When it came to the vulcanizing shop, they said they couldn’t fix the tire either. So Junnard borrowed the vulcanizing shop’s tricycle to take Paolo to the nearest bike shops. And they went to two more bike shops to find the right tire and inner tube for Paolo’s wheelset.

From here, Paolo pedaled for 45 KM until his tire lost pressure again. It turned out that the inner tube he bought was defective. So at this point, he called his girlfriend Nicole who had just finished the Audax 200. Paolo even managed to inflate his remaining inner tube to get to Iba, Zambales

Where Nicole picked him up. So it looks like we’re going to have a revenge ride Paolo next year! After I helped Paolo with his big sidewall tear. I had a problem with my tire. It was losing air pressure like its problem in Audax Siargao Chaz: You’re sweating so much! Chaz: Hihihihi

Chaz: Poor you Chaz: Hahahahaha My tubeless valve which is why air was hissing out of the tire. I tried to put air but the problem with my Lezyne (Pocket Drive Pro) is that I turn it into the valve And every time I remove the (pump) the valve core comes out too

So all the air comes out. Just a note here that I learned later that the tightness of my tubeless valve core was not right, so it comes with the handpump when I remove it. I learned that this Presta valve cover can also be used as a valve core tool

To make sure the valve core is tight and doesn’t come off right away. I gave up and fixed the tubeless valve and inserted an inner tube. When I got the inner tube in, the same thing, the (valve core) was still coming out along with when I pulled out that Lezyne mini pump

Because it was screwed on at the valve After a while, Carlo, who was with me, had pliers and we were able to stop it (and let a little air in). I was able to ride it a little bit but air was till coming out. Fortunately, I found a vulcanizing shop.

And that’s when my rear tire was inflated with a problem. But, I was also left behind. And it’s high noon already. It doesn’t look like I’m… I’m a little tired from getting my tires fixed. I’m just here at a bakeshop, at Chiong’s Hangout. Here in Candelaria, Zambales. I’ll let the heat pass first.

Eat first. Cool down first. The bakeshop salesperson also asked where I was from. I told that I was coming back to Subic from Masinloc and there was an event with many cyclists. But the next question he asked me was, “Why are you left behind?”

I just laughed and said it’s hot and it’s too hot. I crawled until I reached Masinloc. I was only running 20-21 kph under the heat of the sun when my bike computer said it reached 40 degrees celsius. Big thanks to Carlo who bought the pliers from an Audax official here.

He thought I might need him again. The climb out of Masinloc was one of the hardest climbs I’ve ever experienced. In addition to being tired, I was nervous that my tire will give out again. Every pothole I pass, I feel my tire sink to the rim.

So I take care to avoid all potholes and rocks on the road. As beautiful as it was before, it’s just as painful now. Wooooh suffering! I continued and slowly counted the kilometers down until I reached Iba, Zambales. I stopped at the first 7-Eleven I passed

And it looked like a paradise for cyclists that day. Many people stopped here to drink, eat and soak in his very cold air conditioner. I just drank coffee because I felt sleepy. When I was about to leave, someone suddenly called me, it turned out to be our neighbor Marco.

We chatted for a while before I said goodbye to go first. Drinking coffee and stopping it helped me a lot because it revived me. Second Wind, the second of the runners. My pace has picked up a little. I was able to do 24 to 25 kph. The heat subsided a little

And I was able to enjoy my surroundings because the Golden Hour was approaching. It was four o’clock when I arrived at the last checkpoint in Cabangan, Zambales. My last 48 KM. Here I also met another friend of mine, Jed, who was finishing the 200 KM. It was about five o’clock when I got

To the turn from San Narciso to San Marcelino, Zambales, which is now called the Mango Highway. This is the turn where many Audaxers mistakenly go straight to San Antonio. If you go straight to San Antonio you will enter the so-called Bermuda Triangle: the triangle of San Narciso, San Antonio and San Marcelino.

This adds about 10 KM to your Audax route. So if you want to finish right away, remember the correct route which is from San Narciso, turn left to San Marcelino. Here, I stopped to drink mango juice. And it was the best mango juice I’ve ever had. Seriously, the headwind here!

I had a hard time here because the headwind from the mountains of Zambales was very strong. And it’s not obvious that it’s False Flat going up to Castillejos. Its average gradient is only 0.3%. But knowing that I was only in the last 20 KM,

I forced myself to speed up in the last towns of Castillejos and Subic. “Empty The Tank” was what I was thinking. And, we are here at the Olongapo cemetery! I’m so happy. It was only here in Audax Subic that I get happy to see a cemetery.

Because this means, you are near Mango Valley. You’re almost done! Cyclist: Whoah! Finished! And at 6:52 PM I reached Mango Valley. Here, I was met by Chaz who finished first at 200 KM. Cla: Jangan! Who is this? Hey Cla! How are you? Cla: We saw you! Me: QR code first, wait haha.

Hiiiii Helloooo Chaz: My Bubbaaaa I’ll scan the QR code first. Is it a queue? Chaz: They’re at Sonamu (Korean Restaurant) already. I finished in 14 hours and 37 minutes. Almost an hour and a half faster than my time last year. Hidde finished first with a time of 11:14, 4th overall

And Ralph with 11:16, 5th overall. Carlo finished in 13:08, 26th overall. Even though I didn’t finish while the sun was still up, I was still glad because I finished faster than last year. This is probably the reason why I do it, the answer to my question earlier: I do it

To find out what I can do. For people who are interested in knowing how fast they can finish it that’s their right too. Even though Audax is not a race, “It’s not a race, it’s not a race.” Maybe the prize here is to know that you can do it.

If there are faults, that’s really included in cycling. The important thing is that we are ready for what may happen. So that we can still go home to the ones we love. Chaz: Congrats, Bubba. Chaz: He’s still alive. Until the next Audax, see you!

The December edition of Audax Subic is one of the biggest cycling events in the Philippines. This year, I rode the 300 KM for the second time looking to beat my time last year. Will I succeed?

Thank you to Chaz Garcia-Angan, Paolo Cruz, Nicole Tan and Carlo Realuyo for the additional footage used in this video.
