自転車で100km、冬の宮古島の遊び方[Brompton M6L 2019]

Shinjuku station, in front of Basta Shinjuku. Traveled by bicycle because my bike is under maintenance. To avoid cold weather, I headed to a southern island for two nights and three days. Loaded bicycle on airplane from Haneda Airport, Heading for Miyako Islands (Shimojishima Airport). The bicycle is a folding bicycle called BROMPTON.

Bicycle is folded at Shinjuku and headed to Haneda. Basta Shinjuku Airport Limousine to Haneda. It takes less than 40 minutes from Shinjuku station to Haneda airport. Haneda Airport Terminal 1. Arrived 2 hours before the plane departed. Check in early and leave luggage.

BROMPTON weighs 12.8kg, so it can be checked in free of charge. The plane I boarded is Skymark. Boarding was 10 minutes before departure. Haneda Airport Takeoff SKY613 to Shimojishima. The flight was around noon, so it was able to take off without waiting. Flight takes about 3 hours. Miyako Islands (Shimojijima Airport) Landing.

Arrived at Shimojishima Airport on time. It is a southern island, but the northerly wind is stronger than expected. Receiving the bicycle that has been deposited. Shimojishima Airport is a bicycle friendly airport. Space for bicycle assembly is provided. Conveniently located just outside the arrival gate. BROMPTON is deployed ready to run.

There is also a dedicated changing room in the restroom. In winter, the temperature difference from Tokyo is about 15 degrees Celsius, It is also great that you can easily change clothes at the airport. Shimojishima Airport Exit. Finally, the bicycle touring begins. Day 1, while half way around Shimoji Island and Irabu Island,

Crossing the longest bridge in Japan that can be crossed by bicycle, the Irabu Ohashi Bridge, We move to the inn in the center of Miyako Island. Cycling less than 30km. Shimojishima has a beautiful ocean right outside the airport. The blue of the sea seen from the road is pleasant.

There was a beautiful sandy beach about 10 minutes after leaving the airport. Sawada beach. Cloudy sky, but this is the blue of the sea. No one is on the beach in the off-season, nice atmosphere. The sun is not shining, but the temperature is just under 20 degrees Celsius.

In December, a long-sleeved T-shirt is just right for exercise. After 30 minutes of cycling, I arrived at the northernmost cape. Swan cape park. Unfamiliar tropical plants growing wild on the cape. Kusatobella (Kusatobella kusatobella), lovely fleshy leaves. Fruits of adan, tropical. After driving for a while, I entered a residential area of Irabu Island.

Houses in Miyako Islands have interesting characteristics. There are almost no wooden houses, and most of them are made of concrete. There is a reason why there are so many square concrete houses, The reason is to withstand typhoons with wind speeds of up to 70 m/s, and to prevent termite damage.

Another major feature is that few houses have tiled roofs. After driving for a while, the destination, Irabu Bridge, comes into view. We are heading for the observatory on the high ground where we can overlook the bridge. We are climbing up the slope, which is quite tough.

After climbing up the hill, we arrived at the observatory. Makiyama Park Makiyama observatory. There was a well built observatory. What a beautifully shaped and wonderful marine bridge. The center part is raised for ships. In the evening, the weather recovered and Miyako Island could be seen clearly.

Going down from the high ground to the coast to cross the bridge. On the way, there was a view spot a little further down. I stop my bike and take a picture. Irabu Bridge can be seen beyond the sugar cane field. The size of the cars shows the enormity of the bridge.

Going down the hill, we finally entered Irabu Ohashi Bridge. The shoulder of the road is wide enough to drive safely. The Irabu Bridge is 3,540 meters long. It takes more than 45 minutes to cross on foot. It is a marine bridge, so be careful on windy days.

The view from near the top of the bridge is exceptional. The clear blue ocean stretches endlessly. This place is worth coming just to see this view. Finally, I crossed the bridge. There is a park near the bridge, so I drop in. This park has a good view of Irabu Bridge.

Tulliver Seaside Park Miyako Sunset Beach. Best point to see sunset and Irabu Ohashi bridge. The park also had a beautiful beach. It was a good memory to visit by my own bicycle. It is getting dark, so I head for the inn. I took a lodging near the center of Miyakojima. Pension Takaragai.

Bicycles are folded and brought into the room. Today I ran 27.2 km from the airport. Dinner is delicious because it is after exercise. Tomorrow I will run 100km, so I drank beer and went to bed right away. Pension Takaragai. This is the second day of Miyakojima touring.

Today we are going around Miyako Island. To cross two big bridges over Miyako Island, This course goes around the island clockwise while sightseeing. Weather is fine today and we can see beautiful scenery. Okinawa Prefectural Road 190 Hirara Nishizato, Miyakojima City, Okinawa. Heading north through the center of Miyakojima.

The town is not so big and farmland spreads out soon. Morning temperature was about 17 degrees Celsius, a little chilly. Okinawa Prefectural Road 230 Hirara-Karimata, Miyakojima City, Okinawa. When you drive in Miyakojima Island, you often see sugar cane fields. Sugarcane is harvested from December to February.

It is fun to see these fields because you don’t see them in Honshu. A little over 10km from the center of Miyakojima, the bridge comes into view. This is “Ikema Ohashi”, one of the three marine bridges in Miyako Island. In the morning, sunlight from behind enhances the blue of the sea.

Bicycle ride with little traffic. There is a view spot near the bridge. Ikema Ohashi parking lot. Very beautiful marine bridge. The sea is too blue to be realistic, though, You can really see this kind of light blue sea with the naked eye.

The reason the ocean looks blue is because of the shallow sandy bottom. The white coral sand makes it look emerald green. There was a structure in the parking lot that shows how the bridge works. A great place for a slightly different souvenir photo. Ikema Ohashi is a 1,425m long marine bridge.

This is a road for daily life connecting Miyakojima and Ikema Island. Like the Irabu Bridge, the center of the bridge is raised. The road is a little narrow but there are few cars and there is no anxiety. You can cross the bridge at a comfortable speed. Ikema Island.

We have entered Ikema Island, circling the island clockwise. Ikema Island is only less than 10km long even if you go around the island. There is a very beautiful beach in the northern part of the island, so I visit it. Parking is provided at the beach. Funax beach (Ikema block).

Wading through tropical vegetation to beach. The beach is a sight to behold. The beach is pure white and clear. Amazingly clear water and white sandy beach are worth seeing. It is a wonderful sandy beach with no garbage at all, though,

It seems to be made possible by the great efforts of the local people. There were people picking up trash when I visited. This is a place where you want to pick up small pieces of trash when you visit. It is a sandy beach that I want to remain unchanged forever.

Crossing the Ikema Ohashi bridge again, I head for the next destination. There is a salt factory near Ikema Island. Visit also to replenish energy. Passing through sugar cane fields, we arrive at the factory. Snow Salt Salt Factory Snow Salt Museum. The beach is in front of the factory and the view is great.

You can see Ikema Ohashi Bridge which you just ran along. Sandy beach is very beautiful and makes you want to swim. Facilities include souvenir shop, cafe, and factory. Visitors can see the process of bagging snow salt. Snow salt soft drink is available at the store.

It was a place where I could relax while looking at the sea. Now that we have replenished our energy, we head to the next place. Next stop is a mangrove forest park. Speaking of mangrove, Iriomote Island is famous for mangrove, Miyako Island also has a large mangrove forest. Mangrove forest in Shimajiri.

Beautiful boardwalk. Mangrove is a mysterious tree that can grow even in seawater. The trunk is supported by numerous roots in muddy ground. This tree grows mostly in brackish water inlets. Crabs. There are various creatures in mangrove forests. Lots of fish were also swimming.

There were a lot of birds that were hunting them, and it was a rich natural environment. The mangrove forest was very nice and I stayed there for a long time. I pick up the pace a little as I will not be able to return before sunset.

Next stop is the easternmost cape of Miyako Island. We drive about 30km along the road with ups and downs. Bike is slow so you can see a lot of things. Miyakojima is also surprisingly rich in dairy farming. I saw many grass rolls in the eastern part of the island.

Sugarcane fields and pastures go on forever. This is a very pleasant road to ride a bicycle on. After riding for a while, there was a lookout point at a higher elevation. Higa Road Park. We could sit and rest in the shade, perfect for a break.

We can see the direction of Ikema Island where we have just run. We could also see the cape at the east end where we are heading. Looking around, you realize the vastness of the ocean. The main island of Okinawa is 300 km ahead in this direction.

The place felt a little cold due to strong northerly wind from the sea. I found that it was around lunch time and I was hungry. I head to the supermarket to get some food. A-Coop, Shiobe store. This is a valuable store because there are few restaurants around here.

It is very helpful that they sell bread and other supplies. Quite a lot of calories taken in. The eastern part of Miyakojima continues to be long, quiet and peaceful. Roads with few buildings and little traffic continue. Finally we reach the base of the cape.

The road stretches to the tip of the cape and heads towards the lighthouse. Finally arrived at the lighthouse, windy and tiring. Higashi Henna-zaki. The tip of the cape can be strolled. Wind was very strong in this place and there were waves. The shorebirds are also taking shelter due to the strong winds.

The cape seems to be a reef and was bubbling. The sea looks pale with breaking waves. There is a lighthouse at Higashiheannasaki that can be climbed. This lighthouse was built by the Ryukyu government in 1967. You can climb it by paying 300 yen at the reception.

You can get a bird’s eye view of the entire cape. It was a mysterious beach with rocks rolling around. Lighthouse lamps can be seen up close. I realized it was almost 3:00 p.m. I still have about 40km to go, so I hurry to my next destination.

Next stop is to see some interesting facilities unique to Miyako Island. This facility is called an “underground dam. Miyakojima is an island without mountains or rivers topographically. The island is made of Ryukyu limestone, which is permeable to water, When it rains, it does not accumulate but flows out to the sea.

Water sources had to be secured to support the vast farmlands. By building a barrier wall in the ground to hold the water within the limestone, Storing water below the ground (underground dam). Fukuri dam (underground dam). This is a place where at first you think it is just a reservoir,

This watertight wall extends more than a kilometer into the ground on both sides. Huge amount of water is stored in the ground on the left side. This facility is not a pond but a water level control facility.

If too much water is stored, the city will be flooded, so the water level is adjusted. Fresh water on land is precious, so aquatic organisms also live there. Lots of frogs were swimming, cute. I spent a lot of time looking at dam facilities. The time was around 16:00.

The sun is getting darker, so I hurry onward. Next, we will go to Kushima Island, which is located on the west side of Miyako Island. Kushima Island also has a large marine bridge. Running toward the sun through the sugar cane fields. Ran about 20km from Higashiheiannazaki to Kuruma Island. Kurima Ohashi (Kurima Bridge).

Pedaling bicycle with very bright western sun. Raima Ohashi bridge is 1,690m long. Gently sloping road, easy to drive. Kushima is a small island, only 9km in circumference. Tobacco and sugarcane fields occupy most of the island. There is an observatory overlooking the Kuruma Bridge on the island. Ryugujo observatory.

Climbing up the observatory shaped like the Dragon’s Palace. From the observatory, we can see beautifully the Kuruma Ohashi Bridge. The Irabu Ohashi Bridge, which I ran yesterday, is also visible. Beautiful sandy beach can be seen on the other side of the river.

I could see a beautiful sandy beach on the other side of the river at the observatory, I move quickly to catch the setting sun. Sunset is late even in December as this is a southern island. Sunset at Miyakojima on December 26 was at 17:57.

Running while looking for a place to go out to the beach, We arrived at the beach just in time. Yonaha beach north. This was another clean sandy beach with no garbage at all. The silky sand was very nice. A little too much cloud and no sunset on the horizon.

It is midwinter, but the water temperature is warm, so some people are playing in the sea. Gradually the world is turning golden. Emotional pictures can be taken no matter where they are taken. Just before sunset, the sea glows golden. Watching the waves come and go is calming.

It was a good view at the end of the day. About 30 minutes passed as I watched the sunset. Since I am on a bicycle, I hurry back to the inn before night falls. We are now back in the center of Miyakojima. Traffic increases considerably in the evening, so drive with caution.

Finally, we arrive at the inn. Pension Takaragai. Today was a 100km bike ride. Dinner at inn, delicious gurukun, Okinawan fish. Sweating and lack of water, so I compensated with beer and went to bed. Pension Takaragai. This is the third and last day in Miyakojima. Today we will visit tourist facilities.

Moving on to Shimojishima Island, seeing the underwater park and botanical garden, Run to catch a flight at 17:00. At first, we head for the underwater park at Ikema Island. We are heading for the same road as yesterday. Turn off the road that went straight yesterday and continue through the field.

The road was dusty in places because it was in a field. Even the tricky roads feel like a journey when you ride a bicycle. A park suddenly appears when you ride along a farm road. This is a facility where you can see fish of Miyako Island. Miyakojima Underwater Park.

Buy tickets at the reception and go down the stairs. When you go down the stairs, you will be underwater about 4m deep. When you look in the window, you will be surprised to see tropical fish swimming around. Many windows are set up so that you can observe at any place you like.

Many different kinds of fish were swimming in abundance. It is rare to find a facility where one can observe so many natural fish. I thought this is the facility to go to in winter when you can’t swim. I enjoyed the ocean, so next time I will go to see the plants.

There is a tropical botanical park in the center of the island, so we head there. Miyakojima is a small island, so there are not many roads. You can get a pretty good grasp of the roads if you stay there for 3 days. I can even tell if there are ups and downs.

As I cycled, I could see where the forest was thicker. This is a tropical botanical garden run by Miyakojima city. Various plants are growing from the entrance. Miyakojima City Tropical Botanical Park. There are many plants whose names are not well known. This is a beautifully maintained park.

Ivy twining around the trees, intricate formations are interesting. There is a garden-like atmosphere with ponds and so on. There are few people in the park, so you can go around calmly. Various flowers were in bloom in the park even in December. Oubeni-gougan, round ball-like flowers are mysterious. Lantana, very beautiful gradation.

Botanical garden has an observatory where I could look over the forest. Interesting forest with many kinds of trees. This is a valley and you can see forest with different elevation. Horses were also kept in the park. They are a native breed of horses called “Miyako horses” and they look like ponies.

It was a horse with cute eyes. I stayed in the botanical garden for a long time. Before I know it, it’s noon, so I go to have lunch. Miyako Island is also a place where tiger prawns are cultivated. We go to eat ramen noodles with local shrimps. Noodle shop Summer Sun.

Ebi Miso Ramen, it was a mass of intense shrimp flavor. It was so delicious that I ordered a double portion and risotto. I feel better all at once after having replenished my calorie intake. With 3 hours left, I will go sightseeing in the direction of Shimojishima where the airport is located.

Irabu Ohashi Bridge. The bridge we crossed on the first day is crossed again. Shimoji Island and Irabu Island come into view. Same bridge but different view from the first day. Because I went around the northern part of the island on the first day,

Today we will run around the southern part of the island. There are many new buildings on the coastline of Miyako and Irabu islands. Many facilities for resorts stand in a row. There is a direct flight to this area, so tourism development seems to be progressing.

There is a beautiful beach on Irabu Island, so I will drop by. Watariguchi beach. Park the bicycle on the breakwater and take a picture. This is beautiful even when taken with GoPro. It is hard to believe that this is a beach at the end of December, it is an everlasting summer sandy beach.

This sandy beach is also fine grained and pleasant to touch. There is water flowing behind the breakwater like a river, though, Actually, the opposite shore is Shimoji Island in the sea. A narrow cove separates Irabu Island from Shimoji Island. It is a paradise-like sandy beach without any smell of rocky shore.

Even in winter, you can enjoy the feeling of everlasting summer on this beach. Having enjoyed the sandy beach, we head for the last sightseeing spot. There are some interesting sightseeing spots around Shimojishima Airport. Running along the road around the airport, we head to the west side of Shimojishima Island.

There are few buildings around the airport, giving a sense of openness. We are going through the quiet sugar cane fields. We have run to a position on the other side of the airport terminal. Street pond. A short walk from the parking lot to the seaside.

As I was walking, I saw a field mouse. There seems to be a lot of rats because there are sugar cane fields. It looks cute, but it seems to be very difficult to prevent wild rats. When you reach near the coast, you will see a huge hole.

The limestone has collapsed to form a mysterious pond. This pond is connected to the ocean underground and is seawater. You can see the terribly blue surface of the water in the light. We could see a very beautiful pond. Finally, we circle the runway and head for the airport.

The area around the runway is a promenade. Shimojishima Airport 17 END. Tip of runway is reclaimed land. The bright blue sea could be seen in the shallow water. At the end of the trip, we took a photo to commemorate the bicycle. BROMPTON ran well for 3 days.

It is a great bike, sturdy, reliable and a great tool. It carries my luggage comfortably and I enjoy touring with it. Just in time to head for the airport. Shimojishima airport. We have arrived at the goal of this trip. Folding up at the bike assembly space at the airport.

It becomes so small that it is hard to believe that it has traveled 100km. 20 minutes before departure, I walk to the plane. Shimojishima Airport takeoff SKY618 to Haneda. I think Miyakojima Island has a strong image of the sea, You don’t have to swim in the sea to have a good time.

The climate is the same as in Kanto around October, so it was easy to exercise. In winter, Miyakojima is off-season, so you can go cheaply. I hope this will be helpful for your travel destination. Thank you for watching for a long time and until the end.
