Planning an Adventure Motorcycle Camping Tour or Off-road SE1-EPS14

Join me while I discuss three adventure websites in Canada and the USA and then go step by step through the creation of a GPX file and it’s installation onto a tablet running satellite navigation software. I’ll then continue on to discuss planning and documenting an Adventure Ride in legs and provide some checklists and things I lookout for before gearing up and heading out.

BDR
Backcountry Discovery Routes is a non-profit organization that creates off-highway routes for adventure and dual-sport motorcycle travel. The organization’s work includes promoting rider education and safety campaigns, driving a positive economic impact to rural communities, and encouraging responsible motorcycle travel in the backcountry. Through the careful investment of funds and working with land managers and other public benefit organizations, BDR seeks to keep remote roads open for motorcycling for generations to come.

The BDR relies on the generosity of our donors and the efforts of a dedicated team of volunteers and ambassadors who contribute thousands of hours each year to help carry out our mission.

Ride the Highlands
Imagine. You’re handed a cold hard axe. You gaze into the thick forest and are told to build the road.

In front of you lay hundreds of miles of some of the most unforgiving Highlands this side of Scotland. You put your head down. Day after day, month after month, year after year, you know that you are doing more than sawing, chopping and hauling. You are crafting a road. A road no one else would or could build.

You breathe in the crisp sweet air and swing.

Ride Lake Superior
Are you ready for it? Three states, one province and this immense lake make for a wicked road trip. Its humbling scenery, tasty places to eat, and bike-friendly places to stay make the Lake Superior Circle tour a must-do vacation. You’ll experience different cultures, and local traditions and meet unforgettable people around the Big Lake.

Lake back your childhood vacation and relive the road trip on your terms, just YOU, your BEST BUDS and your tricked-out STEED.

GPX
A GPX file, also known as a GPS Exchange Format file, is simply a text file with geographic information such as waypoints, tracks, and routes saved in it. You can use GPX files to transfer that information between GPS units and computers.

Google my maps
Google my maps is a web-based mapping tool that allows you to create custom maps by marking specific locations, adding text, images, and videos, and sharing them with others. You can use it for personal or professional purposes, such as planning a trip, organizing a project, or showcasing points of interest.

DMD2
DMD2 is an Android app that can be run as a regular app or as your default home launcher.

It is aimed to transform any Android device into a dashboard for motorcycles, although it should work just as good in any other vehicle. Our special focus is Adventure and Off-Road.

The whole purpose of it is simplicity, minimize user interaction, number of clicks, swipes, simple dialogs and big buttons, only the required functions and options for riding. Because when you are on a motorcycle, riding, with your gloves on, having to play around with a touchscreen or having to go through lots of menus, with interfaces that were not done specifically for motorcycle use, it can become a nightmare.

DMD2 is built from the ground to perfectly integrate handlebar controllers, enabling you to control most features from your handlebar!

2018 Suzuki 650 V-Strom
Suzuki’s V-Strom 650 has enjoyed immense popularity ever since the model’s debut in 2004. Compared to over-the-top 1,200cc and above ADVs, the current third-generation V-Strom 650 balances reasonable bulk and mass with reasonable power, making it a totally reasonable solution for multifaceted riders. The 645cc, 90-degree, DOHC V-twin makes power across a wide swath of the rev range and has a pleasant, modest vibration signature as well. For new riders, Suzuki’s “Low RPM Assist” feature automatically adjusts engine speed while you’re getting underway.

The standard V-Strom 650 is decidedly road-oriented, and thus is outfitted with black cast aluminum wheels and street rubber. Meanwhile, the V-Strom 650XT aims to conquer both tarmac and trails with its wire-spoke wheels, tubeless dual-sport radials, a skid plate, and handguards. These features reportedly add 3 inches to the bike’s width and 6 pounds to its curb weight (476 pounds for the V-Strom 650XT versus 470 pounds for the 650). While that’s heavy for a true dual-sport bike, it’s impressively light for ADV bikes in general, which further explains the popularity of the V-Strom 650 and the 650XT.
