Cycling to an Island Shrine in Fukui Prefecture 🇯🇵🚲

This tiny 2 kilometer island off the coast of Fukui Prefecture is accessible via a beautiful vermilion bridge – you can ride across to Oshima (雄島) sometimes called the “island of the gods.” There you can climb the stone steps to a quiet wooded shrine, or walk around the island. We stopped here in Sakai City in Fukui Prefecture a few weeks ago on our drive back to Ishikawa from Wakayama. It was just going to be a quick bike ride to break up the long day in the car, but I was so pleasantly surprised by this scenic bridge and island, and I hope we can return to spend more time here one day! My footage isn’t the best since it was a bit overcast on this ride, but it was such a peaceful place on the ocean.

This island was formed from lava, and this part of Fukui is probably best known for the Tojinbo Cliffs, a rare example of columnar jointing. Just next to the island you can walk along the Araiso Promenade to admire those cliffs, and boat tours are offered.
