Riding 45 km in Japan on my grandma’s bike!

Welcome back to my channel. Now I’m in Gunma in Japan. I came back to see my grandma. Unfortunately, she passed away. So today I want to take my grandma’s bike and go back to my hometown, which is like 45 kilometers away. I’m going to go one last ride with my grandma. So, I’m gonna go Okay, it’s gonna be a long ride So my grandma was 91 years old She was very nice to me when I was young. and even after I grew up so I want to take her to take her… Take her bike one last ride in Japan Maebahi city is the capital of Gunma prefecture so it’s quite populated and I’m going to Myogi it’s about 45 kilometers and… that doesn’t sound bad but not many Japanese… not many Japanese pedal that far and the road is not straight at all. It’s really like a maze. Oops, somebody’s…(coming) It’s not really safe to walk or ride a bike in Japan unfortunately. Today’s goal is going back to Myogi But also, try not to die because there is not many bike road in Japan And the road Is quite narrow The first rest spot… – well done -is a Seven Eleven and she’s my sister, Ayano. and my grandma left me a lot of stuff and one of them is a lot of coins so we’re gonna use them Did you really get the dango? Of course! Look at these shiny balls! if you come to Japan you must eat this it’s rice balls very good See you later! Bye. A good thing about Japan is… there are so many convenience stores so you can get tasty snacks everywhere So I started from Maebashi and now I’m in Takasaki till here It’s okay because it’s flat But there will be a big mountain I have to go over Nice, it looks like a mountain road. I wonder if I go up here. I don’t know if I can go up here. I think I… I think it’s okay to go up here. I’m not car. ”Road Closed”… I wonder if I cannot… Maybe not then. Okay. If the local is going up, I think I can go too. Okay. But it’s steep. Oh my god This bike is so small Hello – Hello Okay Sorry grandma, I can’t pedal your bike probably if I Put the seat up a little bit more then it is easier to pedal Okay, this is the highest OK. Let’s try again Oh, yeah it is easier for sure but still it’s steep and I need the gears I’m not sure if I can keep on pedalling It’s hard with this bike Okay, the steep hill is finished. And now I have to take the road, which is actually more scary. But still, people are walking so should be fine. Hello – Hello Oh, I forgot to get water. Shit. It’s still in the beginning of May but people are talking about heat attack in Japan. And the vending machine is everywhere. I have so many coins. 13, 14… Okay. Little bit of downhill. Okay, this is a little bit steep so I’m a bit… this is a bit steep but yes. Okay, okay okay. Actually the downhill is scarier than uphill. And it seems like I’m going in here. And it’s gonna be a quite downhill. and I don’t trust this break. I do not trust this break but… normally the people living in Japan use this break so it’s supposed to be okay but I’m so scared here probably okay. I just need to go I just need to let it go okay, I just need to let it go I don’t understand how Japanese people are going downhill with these brakes. I think… this brake is getting weaker. Just a moment. I don’t want to go uphill and yes. Now I can squeeze the brake all the way. It’s getting soft Smells smokey Is my bike okay? I wonder if my brakes are burned a little bit Nice! I like this country road better than like… riding in the city that was a bit stressful so many cars and the road was quite narrow but here, nobody is here except that truck it’s kind of slow, but yeah… it’s getting burned so scary oh my god! yes! it’s slipping a little bit I think I’m on the other side of the mountain. I’m just going down the hill. So behind the mountain there will be Tomioka City and that’s where my high school was And there are a weird theme parks two of them and I’ve never been there so I just wanna take a look. nice oh this road is very good looks very mysterious oh i can’t see something weird there what is this place? it’s… it’s, isn’t it a bit stupid? What is wrong with this building? Isn’t it… Isn’t it a bit… too much? What is this place? You can watch how mentaiko is processed. Tasting! Let’s go eat it! Tasty? Yummy! What do you want to eat? Onigiri looks good. Doesn’t Mentai Pasta look delicious too? Okay. Let’s eat! Mentai onigiri. The mentai is a spicy, raw fish egg. Okay. I’ll eat. This is going to be really tasty. This is good. This is mentai ice cream. It’s weird. It’s weird taste like… I don’t know. In the beginning, it was like, "huh?" I wasn’t… I was not sure about that. And later, it tastes like cheese, actually. Later. Okay, the Mentai Park is done. That was quite a unique experience. the food was actually quite tasty especially the onigiri and the next place is even weirder oh it’s very, um, busy! So this is the flower of the Konjac potato? Yes, that is the flower. Look at the konjac seeds! Gross! Gunma produces 95% of it! Konjac potato! We’ve gone around, so let’s eat. This isn’t All-You-Can-Eat, is it? It is. buffet-style. (And it’s free of charge.) Looks yum! Konjac ramen! How about yakisoba? I’ll eat yakisoba! Here you go. What should I eat first? Eat what you want first. Ramen then! The soup is tasty, as I expected. Tastes of ramen. It is different from normal ramen noodles. It’s different but still tasty. Next is dengaku. Yes Dengaku must be tasty because it’s konjac! Yes Yes. It’s very good. Yakisoba? I like it! Ayano’s favorite. Tako Karage, isn’t it? Something like that. Something like that. I’m not sure what to think about deep-dried konjac. Feels like eating octopas. It’s chewy! I like it! Yum! Okay, I’ve got to pedal again. You’ve restored energy. Time for you to go. A foot bath is just great! I’m off. Take care! Now I’m full. But Connyaku, Conjac, is pretty healthy food. not many calories and good for digesting system it’s quite common food in Asia but people don’t eat much konjac in other countries I was surprised and it’s after four o’clock I have two hours to get to Miyagi shrine but from here it’s gonna be uphill all the way to the Myogi shrine and just before the Myogi shrine there will be a big hill I’m not really looking forward to that Tomioka is the city where my high school is. so I know the road a little bit more so I can pedal a little bit faster. cool. It’s a really good torii gate. cycling tour, Myogi View Ride! ah! you should join. it’s so beautiful. yes I used to pedal this road very straight. it looks like a never-ending road. I wish I had a gear but I didn’t get hit by a car and and the bike is holding up quite well good bike, grandma big highway look at the beautiful Myogi mountain now I have to pedal up till the shrine okay one last part Okay, the sun is setting. It’s getting very steep and very hard to pedal. It’s so hard. Okay, I have to push my bike up. Okay. Street racers? Almost there. Okay, the last hill was hard. Okay, this is… Myogi shrine is up there. That was hard. It was steep. oh yes this is Myogi shine Tomorrow. I’m gonna go up there tomorrow, maybe …maybe Are there still street racers in the parking lot? Yes. I was a bit scared. Yeah, they are dangerous. Probably. Having said that… don’t you feel like there would be friends in the group? Did you have fun? How about you, sis? Did you have enough? It was fun, but very painful sometimes. Are you satisfied? I’m very… very satisfied. Yes. I don’t need to do this again. Really? I have some regrets. What? What is it? Some places I could’ve filmed better. Oh, that? You don’t want to join me for a ride? NO. Like, 2 years from now I’d like to follow you around by car again. I want to pedal together. Next time, I’d love to go eat pork cutlets. Okay. Next time, we will take a different route then. I guess this is it. This is it. Thank you. Well done!

I came back to Japan to see my grandma. Regrettably, she passed away after I spent one final moment with her. Today I wanted to take her bike from Maebashi to my hometown, Myogi, which is about 45 km away. I hope you enjoy my last ride with my grandma!

  4. Hi Yuka, sorry about your grandma, but what a nice way to say goodbye doing this ride of your old neighbourhoods. When I was in high school I got my grandma's old bike and rode with my friends up and down hills and forests long before MTB was a word. Keep your chin up and have fun.
    Greetings from England, AndyB
