Brompton Folding Bicycle For Bike Touring, WILL IT MAKE IT? | Bike Touring Japan #6 🇯🇵

You made it brother. I’m ready to go, I’m ready to go. Let’s do it man. Let’s do it. My friend has been bikepacking Japan on a bromped and folding bike and we’re not just taking flat roads either. The first day we climbed a thousand meters in elevation going up some extremely steep hills. Come on man you made it this far. We got this. In this video he’ll tell you what he thinks about bikepacking with his Brompton folding bike. Your thoughts on bike touring on a Brompton? Uh it’s way more. Also I’m in Takaoka City, a city known for its black curry and ramen. So of course I had to give it a try. At the end of the video I get some really good news so stay tuned for that. And if you haven’t already please check out the previous episodes of the bike tour across Japan series. Hey, thank you. And like, subscribe, comment as it helps spread the video to newer audiences. Good morning from Toyama. As you can see we’re breaking down the tents. It’s about it’s around 6 30 almost 7 o ‘clock. Last night was windy as hell. We had a really tough time setting up these tents but it feels pretty uh calm right now. We’re gonna pack up. Today will be Nick’s last day. He’s gotta gotta say Sayonara. It’s been good. He’s gotta head back to Tokyo. He’s got, I don’t know, he’s got a real job, real responsibilities. Glad he was able to join for this week though. It’s been fun. Breakfast of champions. Some margarita pizza bread. It wasn’t nice. It was nice. From Family Mart? Mmhmm. Damn! They really don’t want you speeding through here, do they? Wow. Gosh. A little obstacle course here. First little stop of the day. About 13 kilometers down the road. We’ve come to the Toyama Kinshin. I don’t know the next Kanji Marina. It’s very quiet. Still kind of early. The restaurant didn’t open yet. Whatever that is over there, it’s a nice glass building. But it looks pretty empty right now. Looks like we got a bunch of… bunch of sailboats and fishing boats out here beautiful nice and then from here we’re gonna go I think I’m not really sure I don’t think there’s any other way but there’s a pretty epic looking bridge right over there that I think we’re gonna have to cross so let’s do it bike is still looking good my tank just stopping off at the loss before we hit the bridge doing a little onigiri break today I’m getting the chicken and vegetable basically like a fried fried rice onigiri these are one of my favorites too hmm can’t go wrong with these Wow that is tall beautiful and good news we don’t have to torture ourselves in the cycle up the bridge this way that would have been horrible but we get to take the elevator hell yeah this would be the halfway point and because we’re not actually on the bridge I get this you only get a an excellent view from down here it’s not the greatest but it’ll work but not not freezing oh yeah that’s pretty chilly oh it is I think these might be my favorite snack are you a fan of these okay I don’t mind I wouldn’t say my top even top 20 even top 20 oh I’ll eat them so I stopped because I want to check out the the Undokai the sports day from the middle school here once again Nick’s like I’m not having it he’s over here passed out the the Undokai’s doesn’t do it for you huh just having a rest with them a little rest Yeah, bye. This is kind of cool. I don’t know why it’s roped off, but I guess you’ve seen enough window guys Yeah, so Nick You did middle school, too. Yeah, you got it. He did Chugako the middle school in the Sasaki for two years So he’s he’s experienced the the Undo Kai We’ve got a good day for that’s for sure Well dang I have some questions for you. Oh shit Well, we’ll see if he can make it if you miss it you can get your next one yeah Your thoughts on bike touring on a Brompton It’s way more comfortable and way easier than I thought it was gonna be I thought it was gonna like die on the mountains, but this Held up pretty good. Mm -hmm. Yeah, it was really good and Everything packs down lightly You can basically carry everything. Yeah, you were a lot lighter than me I would say you didn’t have any like you didn’t bring any cooking stuff. So that would have made you a little heavier. Yeah, sure But oh that reminds me I got some presents for you. I’ll give you the peanut butter and Yay, I like presents So we did about a week How long do you think you could do a bike tour on a Brompton, I mean this could keep going for sure and Probably do like shorter days like less 100k days, right? And I mean we did probably 300 to 400k I think Appreciate it. Just leave it there. Yeah, enjoy Nice just more weight for me Yeah, more weight Six minutes you kidding me. I don’t think you’re gonna make it. What’s the time 1108? Oh wait, okay leave that 12 so i think i’ll leave it what’s that i’ll leave it 11 12 yeah yeah so i think i’ll try and just okay hold up and run run to the train no real problems you said your spoke was kind of bothering you yesterday i think it’s the mountain roads have like kind of you know put the wheels out of alignment a bit but i think it’s just a case of you know rejigging the spokes a little bit yeah thanks got three minutes to catch this shinkansen i mean i guess if you didn’t have to watch that undokai for so long you could have more time yeah I think the next one’s like 30 minutes or something, so I’ll just try it. Yeah, that’s one thing. That’s one good thing about Japan. There’s gonna be a train. If you miss this one, there’s gonna be a train soon after. There’s always a train in Japan. There’s always a train. Look at that. Look how cute it folds up. I got a little Ikea back here. Mmm, okay. You just stick it inside. That is not a Brompton bag, huh? No, it’s meant for furniture, but it doesn’t go. Just jumps right in here. So here in Japan, you can’t take a regular bicycle on the trains, and so you can do folding bicycles also. I’m out of luck. I could not go. But we’ll see. I’m heading down to Kyoto and Shikoku and that area, and Nick might join up a little bit later on the trip after he goes back. Maybe I’ll do another week with you, man. Yeah. It’s kind of crazy, so he’s basically just going back the same route we went. He’s going back to Toyama City, and then to Jōetsu, and then he’s gonna swing through Guma, through Takasaki. So basically just backtracking our steps. Two minutes. It’s 11 -11. Oh, shit. Oh, shit. All right. I’m gonna have to run. If I don’t get it, I’ll see. That is a train. Oh, shit. Yeah, I don’t think I’ll get it, dude. Good luck. If I do get it, I’ll see you. All right, man. Thank you. Run, run, run. come on just take the next train i don’t think he’s gonna make it gotta go gotta go the door shut that’s how it was getting on i just made it dude he did make it i thought he was gonna have to come out here and hang out with me for a little bit longer but yeah that’s the end of the nick t and nick k journey for now you know like he said he might join up with me later on maybe catch the shin concert and link up somewhere else but for now it’s just gonna be me uh nick i just want to say thanks for joining me for that first week uh good times man so you know i’ve known nick for a long time he actually came in 2010 the same year i did and uh we were good just you know drinking buddies we’d go out with same group of guys and you know go hang out but this is the first time we’ve really got to This much time together and it was good. I appreciated it. It was Good to have this company. And so That was just me You know, maybe I’ll who knows maybe I’ll link up with somebody somebody else along the way What are we gonna do we’re in Takaoka right now I was just in the information office right here and Guy was giving me some tips and things to do around here I Looks pretty damn good. So I found a place to work right across the street from the Shinkansen station. There’s just a lovely little cafe They are serving up some black So I asked the guy over there in the tourist office What’s uh, what a taco guy’s famous for and he was just like Maybe black curry or like black ramen. So came over here and try it out. I ended up getting that doria So doria, well black rice too. Well, check that out. Oh And so Doria is basically just Japan’s version of gratin. And so gratin is usually made with potatoes Japan’s version they call it doria and they they make it with rice The black black squid ink maybe Super cheesy All righty almost six hours later We’re on our way and a lot had a lot to catch up on that’s for sure Very nice street, but Quiet everywhere you go in Japan, it feels like You know, India, India was so chaotic and noisy on one spectrum. All the women looking very sudard and they’re coming forward with America. You America? Wow, look at that. Are you cold? No. No. Where are you from in America? And then Japan is the complete opposite. It’s just, maybe that’s why I like Indonesia and places like the Philippines and it’s like a little bit of both. Not that I don’t like it here or India. Don’t get it twisted, but you know what I’m saying, it’s just, it is dead here. Nothing. Okay, what we’re going to do, we’re going to go eat some black ramen for dinner. That’s what that guy at the tourist office recommended. Had some black doria for lunch, let’s go wrap it up with some black ramen. That’s what you do here in Takoka, I guess. Alright, this is what we’re going to have for dinner, some shoyu ramen, some toiyama para -ku ramen. Ooh, that’s flickering really bad, even though I changed the settings. That is dark. It also comes with a little croquette, a little fried potato, I think. Mmm, that smells good. Onigiri. Tororo onigiri. Okay, wow, look at that. I have never seen an onigiri like this. I’m not a big fan of tororo, but I’m doing it for the video. It’s like mashed up yam, right? And so, hukurewa tororo? Tororo haitoru? Did I? So, miluri atu wa tororo? A kombu. A kombu, yeah. Like a shirui atu, yeah? Onigiri. Onigiri, yeah. Okay, just a different… It’s made from the same thing, which is different. Okay, I can do it like this. I like it. It has some sort of like pink ginger in there, I think, or some sort of… Not ginger. What is that? Umeboshi. That’s the one I’m looking for. Umeboshi, I think. All right, let’s give this black dang. That is dark. Got some onions, some taki nokko. This is some bamboo. Some of it just splashed on my arm and it’s really hot. Noodles, pretty firm, not too soft, but they’re good, tasty, a little salty, it’s good. Japan, they fry things perfectly. Eating healthy again tonight. That chicken not buying last night. And then some ramen, some fried potatoes. Eating healthy. Thank you. I don’t know what to say I don’t know what to say I don’t know what to say I don’t know what to say Okay, from here Where are we going to go? Find a place to sleep That is friggin big What are you doing? What are you doing? What are you doing? What are you doing? What are you doing? What are you doing? What are you doing? awesome Let’s go Looks like we have something to do tomorrow Sweet He’s alive He’s alive I’m trying to help you out, brother Get out of the road You’re going to get run over I think I’m out This is definitely This must be some sort of Matsuri pre -party thing going on Found my spot for the night There’s a little community center Over there Some swings and some kids play equipment so it kind of looks like an abandoned lot but it’s not It’s nice and manicured, nice soft grass I’ll be able to sleep well I’m happy I found this place It’s quiet in the middle of a neighborhood here so I should be good Tomorrow we have a little festival Matsuri to go to That should be fun, so looking forward to that It’s only like 9 o ‘clock Time to get some sleep Thanks for watching See you tomorrow

  1. It was great having Nick T join me for the first week of the bike tour. We had some good times together! Maybe he can join up a little later on down the road for another round! Today we had some beautiful weather for this journey from Toyama to Takaoka. Didn't make it too far in this one. Nick T had to catch the train and I needed to get some work done! So I spent around 6 hours in the cafe trying to get episode 1 out finally! If you haven't seen it check it out here! https://youtu.be/YtEebwqD9F4

What do you think of the bike tour so far? Lemme know!

  2. Brompton is good, I ride it too, but he need to manage the bike rack or bracket for the stuff, it sold separately from another brand which is suit for Brompton.

  3. Japanese rice balls are truly the most convenient snack!
That Dorayaki is also a world-famous snack, and it was Doraemon who made it famous!

Nick T’s folding bicycle is really cool. He can carry it for running, which is really convenient!

The scene when you followed him into the station move me so much. It is obvious that you have a good relationship with him!

I completely agree with what you said. Japan is really an extremely quiet country, which sometimes makes people very creepy.
In comparison, sometimes lively countries are more interesting!

Thank you very much for sharing such a touching episode, I’m very looking forward to the next one! 👍😍🙏
