ロードバイクで高かったけど、やってよかったカスタム、微妙だったカスタム

I’ve done so many types of customization on my bikes. So, I picked some expensive ones. And today, I’ll tell you which customizations were effective and which weren’t worth doing. [Coating] The first one is coating. Bike coating is getting popular. Many companies like Lavaggio offer this. My bikes have crystal coating from 4° Crest. So far, I’ve gotten two of my bikes coated: Trek Domane and Cannondale Topstone Carbon. And the chains on my Topstone Carbon have titanium coating. So, that’s a lot of coating and quite expensive. It varies depending on the grade and service, but this service usually costs several hundred dollars. Even then, honestly, I’m glad I had it done. Of course, it looked great at first, and plus, it lasts a long time. I had it done a year ago or so. Even after going on super muddy terrain, I can wash most of it off with water. That’s a great feeling. So, I can keep my frame pretty clean with the coating. So, for me, this customization was worth it. Next up is a ceramic bottom bracket. [Ceramic Bottom Bracket (BB)] I’m not sure about this one. I didn’t feel the benefit, to be honest. I’m sorry if you’re using one. But cyclists at my level are less likely to feel that much difference. It could be just me, though. A ceramic BB is ten times more expensive than a regular one. You could get a regular one for $20 to $30. Or you could spend $200 to $300 on a ceramic bottom bracket. On flat terrain and climbing, did it make that much of a difference? I wasn’t quite sure. Maybe, it was kind of smoother. But it was more like an accessory, to be honest. The ceramic is supposed to reduce the resistance. So, if you have a high cadence, you might feel the difference. I pedal around 90 rpm on flat terrain. I might reach 100 rpm at times. I like to ride on torque. And when going uphill, I don’t climb with high cadence. Rather, I like to step hard on the pedals. So, with my style, it might be hard to benefit from ceramic. Even then, in my opinion, the cadence on which ceramic becomes beneficial is a lot higher than 100 or 200 rpm, to be honest. Next up is TPU inner tubes. [TPU inner tubes] It’s made of polyurethane. It’s a high-end inner tube that is ultra light. I’ve tried several. Right now, I’m using them on my Aethos. So, how do I like them? They made quite a difference. To focus on the light weight, they’re a great option. And their puncture resistance is pretty good. Let me tell you the brand of the ones I’m using. It’s the one from Schwalbe. I’m mostly satisfied. But I’ve gotten a defective one at one time. There was a hole close to the valve, so I couldn’t even pump it up. That was pretty disappointing. It’s like, "There goes my 50 dollars." So, the damage I get from a flat tire is quite big. I mean, mentally. I still think they’re worth it. But when it comes to ride comfort, I don’t think it improved that much. For ride comfort, I’ve only tried the 25C. So, they all get hard. Both butyl and TPU inner tubes are high in air pressure. But if you use TPU inner tubes for 32C or 40C tires, ride comfort might improve. I have tubeless tires for 28C and over. So, I don’t need tubes. TPU inner tubes are too expensive to keep for a spare. So, I feel I can only use them in certain situations. Since Aethos is lightweight, I chose lightweight inner tubes. By the way, fixing a flat tire is easier. Unlike butyl tubes, they’re smooth, so it’s easy to take them out. And I think they’re less likely to get pinched. Also, it gets very small when rolled. So, you can put it in a tool box or pocket easily. I just wish they were a little less expensive. Next up is the carbon bottle cage. [Carbon Bottle Cage] I can’t tell the difference at all. This is pretty much for your own satisfaction. Honestly, many aluminum bottle cages are lighter than carbon ones. Even if the carbon one is lighter, it’s only by a couple of grams. But the carbon one is twice as expensive as an aluminum one. Bottle cages from Supacaz are very light. So, it’s hard to find one that’s even lighter. Even if you find one, the price is probably twice as much or more. So, it’s almost never worth the money. I have a plastic one on my Domane, a Supacaz aluminum one on Aethos, and Fidlock for my gravel bike, Topstone Carbon. So, I’m not using a carbon bottle cage at the moment. Next up is an integrated handlebar/stem. I liked this a lot. It’s very good. I’m so satisfied. You should first get the position fitted if you’re going to use one. Your positioning changes depending on your style. Or as you get used to riding your bike, your positioning will be more aero. And you’d want a longer stem. Then it’ll be expensive to replace it. Even then, it looks super cool. It looks very stylish. I have one on my Aethos. Matching the Roval Alpinist handlebar with the thin frame of Aethos is truly cool and stylish. And when I’m riding my bike, it feels stiff. It doesn’t flex much even when I put a lot of power. It’s up to your preference, but it doesn’t bother me much. If I were to mention disadvantages, the one is that it’ll cost a lot if you don’t like the measurements. Also, you may be wanting to attach a bell and bike computer. But that’s difficult to do. If it’s an aero handlebar, you can’t really put anything on it. Or you have to get a special mount. So, you can’t arrange items on the handlebar as you want, which is a disadvantage. But I like to keep the items on my handlebar clean, so it wasn’t a problem. Now, last but not least. Excuse me for introducing a part I’ve created. I hope you still enjoy it. Next up is the Beer Top Cap I’ve created. [Beer Top Cap] Well, excuse me. I’ve created a top cap on which you can put a beer crown cap. And I’m glad I created this product. It cost a lot of money to make it. But even with the cost, I’m glad I made it. If you’re focused on your performance and light weight, then there’s no advantage to you. But for any type of bikes, like a high-end road bike and entry bike, this part adds a great touch of playfulness. So, personally, I’m happy that I made this. It’s 4,000 yen ($25.93), not cheap, but I think this is a great item. My handlebar end plug is also complete, so it’ll be released soon. Please check it out. So today, I talked about expensive customizations I thought were great and the ones that weren’t worth it. It was mostly my subjective views, but I hope they help you. 1.
