【TBSスパークル】高山樗牛と鶴岡 山形県鶴岡市(その1)Takayama Beef and Tsuruoka Tsuruoka City, Yamagata

Tsuruoka City is located in the southern part of the Shonai region of Yamagata Prefecture. The area of Tsuruoka City is the 7th largest in Japan, the widest in the Tohoku region, and the 10th largest in Japan by municipality. Takayama chogyuu was a Japanese literary critic and thinker of the Meiji era. He was born in February 1871 in Tsuruoka, Hazen Province (present-day Tsuruoka City, Yamagata Prefecture). His father was a samurai of the Shonai domain, but in 1872, he was adopted by his uncle, Kyuhei Takayama. His adoptive father, Kyuhei Takayama, worked in Yamagata and Fukushima prefectures and for the Metropolitan Police Department. He dropped out of Fukushima Junior High School, went to Tokyo English School, and then entered the Second High School in Sendai, where Junnosuke Inoue was a classmate and friend. While a student at Niko, Takayama founded the "Bungakukai Zasshi" (Literature and Human Life), the predecessor of the "Shoshikai Zasshi" now inherited by Tohoku University, and wrote "Bungaku to Jinsei" (Literature and Human Life) and other articles. The name "chogyuu" was derived from "Zhuangzi," which he had used since his high school days, and he published critiques and travelogues as "Takayama chogyuu" in Doujinshi and Yamagata Nippo. The word "cho" means a twisted and knobbly large tree, i.e., one that is not covered by an inked rope, and "gyuu" means a huge beast that is inferior to a cat in terms of taking rats. Therefore, the name "Kougyu" means "not accepted by the mundane world," and the name was intended to mean "a person with a spirit of absolute freedom, far removed from the mundane world. In 1893, Takayama Kogyu entered the Philosophy Department of Tokyo Imperial University’s College of Letters. Takayama chogyuu was one of Doi Bansui’s seniors and highly appreciated Doi Bansui’s talent. The person who played a key role in bringing Bansui Doi to the world as a poet was chogyuu. Takayama is said to have moved his permanent residence to Hokkaido to avoid conscription.
