This is the former Uwa village. We will walk from north to south. There is a mythical post office. “Kanwa” is the former name of the village. It is now Matsuyama City, but before that it was Nakajima Town, and even before that was Shinwa Village. Oh! There is an alley.

I remembered the last time I walked. There are alleys (vertical roads) that extend toward the mountains, and houses are lined up along them. This is a vertical road perpendicular to the coastline, but I don’t think the vertical roads were connected horizontally.

In this way, a gate resembling a nagayamon gate faces the vertical road, and the entrance is built there. In other words, the building surrounds the perimeter of the site. The wind must be strong.

As you can see, there is no road towards the next vertical street, so you cannot go to the next vertical street unless you return to the main street of the side street one time at a time.

I walked from the north end of the village to the south end. Since the pier is closer to the south, the center of the village is probably also closer to the south. The village was characterized by having one main side street and many vertical roads, with houses facing the vertical roads.

怒和島
怒和島は、愛媛県松山市沖の忽那諸島西部にある。北岸の平地に畑が広がっているほか、急傾斜地を除く島全体に柑橘が植えられている伊予柑栽培の島。島には２つの集落があるが、もともとの集落は島の北岸・宮之浦にあったが、いつの頃からか現在の上怒和、元怒和の二集落に分かれたという。産業の中心は柑橘栽培であるが、わずかにタマネギやスイカも作られている。近年ミカン価格の低迷により、ヒラメ養殖が始まり、島の経済の新しい柱として期待されている。日本の小さな離島には、二つの集落があるというパターンが多く、その場合二つはライバルのような関係になっていることが多い。この怒和島の二集落もだいたい同じような規模であるが、元怒和の方に郵便局や小中学校があるから、中心的な役割をもっている。
元怒和の集落空間は非常に興味深いものである。まず、家々が密集しているのにかかわらず長屋門と庭を持って屋敷地を囲むように設えている点である。この長屋門をもつ形態は、松山市郊外の農村地域でも見られるので経済的に富を得た農家の共通のスタイルなのであろう。それを、半ば無理やり密集した島の集落の中で創りあげている点が元怒和の特徴となっている。海岸線に平行に道があり、それと直交するかたちで細い通りが延びている。その通りは狭く、広いものでも単車が通れるのがやっとである。
一方、上怒和の方が元怒和に対して一人あたりの所有する柑橘園面積が大きいそうである。上怒和の集落は元怒和の町並みの特徴に似ている。海岸線に沿った道と直交しながら集落の内部へ延びる道。この二つの通りに面して狭隘ながら屋敷としての構えを造っている。

中島
中島は、愛媛県松山市の西側にある忽那諸島中最大の島で忽那諸島の中心でもある。島のかなりの面積が柑橘園となっており、初夏には島全体がミカンの花の香りにつつまれる。古くは奈良時代から文献に残り、平安時代には豪族忽那氏の本拠地となった。南北朝時代には忽那氏は最盛期を迎え、西瀬戸に勢力を張ったものの、豊臣秀吉の天下統一とともに歴史から姿を消した。その後は、商品作物の島となり、主力作物がショウガ、除虫菊、タマネギと移り変わった。近年は日本一の伊予柑産地として柑橘の島となっている。
中心集落は大浦。湾の海岸線は円弧を描いていて、その同心円の内側に入った通りがかつての海岸線で町の主軸と思われる。そこには比較的古い民家が並んでいるので町並みとして注目できる。面白いのは商店の前だけにアーケードが造られていること。この現象は、かつてほかの島でも見たことがあるが、一定のルールなんだろう。忽那諸島の他の島でも見られた。
もう一つの集落は神浦。この港にも定期船が運航している。この集落は海岸沿いながら漁村ではなく完璧な伊予柑農村で、見事な柑橘園が見どころでもある。
