전직 현대차 연구원이 말하는 베타 엔진의 진실

1991 Lantra WRC Australian Rally Class Winner 1992 Scoupe Pikes Peak Hill Climb class winner 1995 Elantra WRC Australian Rally Class Winner 1997 Accent Hyundai Rally Sports European rally debut 1998 Tiburon F2 enters WRC with MSD of UK Participated in 2000 Accent WRC WRC top class It’s really an honor to meet you.

Because I love motorsports so much After looking for a lot of information, I found out about the person in charge. I’ve seen it a lot in TV material, magazines, etc. Does it appear in magazines too? yes So I collected them all

I used to have that magazine too, but it seems to be gone now. Yes, it was hard to find Please briefly introduce yourself. I worked at Hyundai Motor Company for about 30 years. Starting as a new employee in 1992 While working in vehicle testing and evaluation, In 1994, in Mabuk-ri (research center)

There is a department that tests and evaluates racing engines. Scoop, Tiburon, etc. I focused on developing alpha engines and beta engines. After working for several years, doing engine testing and car development, I was offered a job at a British company called Motor Sport Developments MSD.

In the second half of 1998, I worked there for about three years. ) (2002) During the World Cup, I re-employed (at Hyundai). At that time, I came to the Namyang Research Institute Power Train Center to mainly customize parts for WRC and high-performance engines and race engines.

I started focusing on things like chassis and power train. A high-performance car division was established around 2019. N Focusing on related products, planning, and development I have a work history that led to my retirement. I’ve just looked at the manager’s history. I participated in the competition as a driver. How did you participate?

I have loved cars ever since I was in school. At that time, I had a Le Mans racer like this. There are clubs outside of our country. Car clubs. The team I was a part of at the time was the Toba Racing Team. They even go to unpaved races and do that.

There was no on-road back then. Because there was no asphalt competition, everything was unpaved. I also won Gymkhana As I did that, I got deeper into the racing world. It’s hard to unravel (the story) because it’s piled up so deep.

We brought you a video to help you recall the memories of that time. This is what I looked like when I was 29 years old I left separately because I was affiliated with Hyundai Motors. The other two came from private affiliations.

I ended up going out with people related to work within the company. The company provided full support. Running on dirt for 4 days and 3 nights is extremely difficult. In the evening, it feels like my arm muscles and my whole body have been beaten up.

Coming down like this right now is about 140 km/h. If you jump like that and you fall, it’s very difficult because you get a shock to your neck and cervical spine. Because it’s a tropical country, you can’t open the door and run. You can’t even turn on

The air conditioner, so the room temperature is almost 50 degrees Celsius. , it goes up by 60 degrees. It was a very difficult match if you couldn’t do it physically or something like that. At that time, that car (Avante) was made in Australia. We sent the

Body shell from Korea and made a roll cage and things like that in Australia. I set up everything and (participated). The engine was supported by Mabukri (research center), and the engine train, valve train, etc. were all modified, and the ECU and other things were sent (to Australia). So, when a rally team

Is formed, usually about five We make about two cars. If two cars go to country A, the next game is next month. Then the other car is in country B. The car that went to country A has to return to its home country and get all the repairs done,

So if the car is damaged in the middle, it is very embarrassing. But even if the car is all damaged, it can be done in two days. They fixed it. I was surprised when I saw that. There is a process of making a pace note in advance and

Running in advance. During the RECCE process, I once received a bicycle coming from a one-way street. (The corners) are blind, right? There, my bike got hit and went flying. Anyway, I was able to handle it well and did well, but I was mentally depressed. As a result, I was

Traumatized before the main game because I didn’t know whether a cow would come out of the corner or something else. This person (Shin-chan) also likes rallies so much that he was a co-driver in Japan a few times, in Hokkaido (APRC)? I went to the JRC (All Japan Rally Championship) regional race, so I

Was a co-driver in the central region, not even at the Hokkaido WRC level. Now, I was looking for a Korean (rally) driver and a co-driver, and when I found out about the person in charge, I felt very awkward. Should I say that? It’s strange.

Should I say that I felt like I was seeing someone I had only seen in letters? The people who come out here were actually my competitors when I went off-roading on Yeongjong Island in Korea. They were very nervous when I came out. At that time, I installed the engine I made myself into the scoop. That’s why I came to

The race. I personally checked the engine durability test at an off-road stadium. I think mechanical knowledge is very important for a rally driver. Even in a place where there is no mechanic, if a problem occurs, I will be there on the spot… You need to be able to take action against that, like a sudden flat tire.

If an electrical problem occurs, you must have the basic knowledge to take action. At that time, not only Hyundai but also Ssangyong participated in the Dakar Rally, Kia participated in the APRC with Sepia, and Daewoo’s Ciero also participated in the Africa Rally. I remember that it was a

Rival at that time. Were you in a relationship? Sepia was a competition. At that time, I entered the Accent and competed with Sepia. So Sepia was a competition because Park Jeong-ryong was the driver at the time and I was an Accent driver at the time. At that time, Hyundai and Kia were

Different companies, so it was a competition. Ssangyong Motors actually participated in the Dakar Rally. I wasn’t that interested in the competition or whether we should do something like that. When I was working at Mabukri, Kia Motors was a huge competitor. At that time, the Scoop Turbo

And Concorde were almost on par. Wayne Bell had a relationship with us since the Elantra. He helped me a lot both physically and financially. I did the engine that was installed in the Elantra at that time, and it was a Sirius engine. 1.6 DOHC It was a Mitsubishi engine at the time.

Tiburon was very hot at the time. I also had a Tiburon at the time. The Tiburon I had was a personal car, but it was a test car. All powertrains are mounted on individual vehicles and evaluated. It was a car I had a lot of love for.

I invested everything I got paid from work into a car. I did a lot of things like mufflers, wheels, tire inches up, and shock absorbers. So there’s nothing I haven’t tried. At that time, the only person (me) who changed the gear ratio was probably the only one.

Everything from the front gear ratio to the final gear ratio was changed. A lot of people wanted to buy my car. There was a line of kids saying they would buy that car when it came up for sale. It’s almost like a factory tune.

There was also a person who came to me personally and asked me to sell him a car. I know that Hyundai started WRC with Tiburon. I understand that from this point on, the company was named MSD. Could you tell us what the company does and how it became connected to Hyundai?

At the time, a company called MSD was a British company. It was a motorsports-related service company located in Milton Keynes, north of London. It was a company that handled everything from making cars to participating in racing games. I don’t know how it came into contact with Hyundai, but it was

The head office at the time. I know that the marketing department discovered this company and developed the Tiburon (rally car). At that time, I changed my affiliation. I worked there and worked as an engineer. I saw almost the entire process from Tiburon development to engine (tuning).

When I was there, the driver was Kenneth Erickson. There was Alistair McRae and there was Wayne Bell. In fact, before Alistair MacRae came in, There were two systems: Kenneth Erickson and Wayne Bell. But since it is a game played in Europe, Wayne Bell’s skills in Australia

He’s a bit out of sync with European skills. Ericsson gets good grades. He gets good grades. Because Wayne Bell doesn’t match well. There was a driver change midway and Alistair McRae was brought in. We proceeded with a two-car stay. It was the beta engine used in Tiburon, the beta 2.0 engine.

The output is about 270 horsepower. I remember it went from 265 to 270. I understand that the normal beta is only around 150 or 160. Since the Beta is a long stroke engine, it is disadvantageous for racing. We reduced the stroke slightly and increased the displacement slightly (the

Beta engine) was less than 2,000cc, so we made it almost 1,998cc and worked to further optimize the engine. The highest rotation speed.. . What I still remember was 8,250 rpm. If you listen to the sound, it is very sharp. At that time, the highest rpm of 2,000cc engines in

Korea was around 5,500. Doing it over 8,000 was a very high-level technology at the time. Beta engines did not work well when modified. was the engine The cylinder block was heavy and made of cast iron, so it wasn’t an engine suitable for racing, so it was very difficult to produce power.

I tried installing it without a turbo. .. I also installed a turbo myself. When I installed the turbo, it produced 400 horsepower.

Turbo cars are good, too. Should I say that N/A’s pushing sound is more to my taste? Oh, of course. I also drove this car locally and felt a sense of pleasure when the sequential transmission shifted gears. .. This feeling of shaking at 8,250 rpm.

.. And when I downshift and do this, I feel a bit of joy. I think I did a show run in Chuncheon once… Oh yes, I did. I was there at that time. At that time, I brought this car (Tiburon rally car) to the Chuncheon off-road stadium. I actually competed there and I

Transported this car because the transmission is sequential so ordinary people cannot (drive) it. I took charge of it and brought this car to you. At that time, this was probably mixed with a domestic car and driven once. Almost… unrivaled haha Now F2 came out and later F2 Evolution came out.

Has there been a lot of modification? This (F2) has a normal fender, right? Evolution is wrong Fenders and all were newly manufactured… They say it’s a wide fender, so those sides are enlarged. So, if you look at the front fender, it’s a bit thick…it’s different from the F2.

It seems like things like the wind tunnel and spoilers have improved a bit. Actually, I also like Evolution more. I still have this red jumper This was the team uniform at the time, and I was with Ericsson. When they do a shakedown test in places like Wales, England, I follow along.

We follow along and do field evaluations and do this. But if you ride next to that guy, Erickson, it’s very rough. He’s a rough bull. He drives really, really rough. Wayne Bell and his driving skills are completely different. Kenneth Erickson needs a little more rotation speed.

He said give me 200 rpm more and he can get one more second. However, from the engineer’s perspective, it is also a problem with engine durability… There is such a thing as behind-the-scenes gossip. I really wanted to hear those stories

At this time, it would have been participated by a Korean brand called Hyundai. What was the reaction of other manufacturers and fans… Are you talking about Verna? Oh, it’s starting with Tiburon. At that time, Hyundai Motor Company was actually a beginner in global motorsports. Subaru, Toyota, etc. were all controlling the rally market.

It was very risky for Hyundai Motor Company, which was a beginner, to enter that market. The results were not as good as we wanted, especially during Verna. The Verna had a very difficult time at first. Hyundai did not fully develop that engine.

There is an engine modification company called Mountune in the UK. We jointly developed it and made it. I know the details of that engine. We put a turbo on a 2L engine and it produces about 330 horsepower. We used a 6-speed sequential transmission. We also had a lot of trouble with

The transmission. I went through that and that’s how I later moved on to Xtrac. When I worked at MSD, there was a workshop right next to it. When the body shell was received from Korea, we did all the sanding work together and saw the entire process of starting with the roll cage.

That car was from back then. At the time, we heard that it was sold to an outsider, so those cars sometimes appeared in the media. They sometimes came up on used car sites. Was it the Legend Rally? He was also active there, and I remember

Paying about 600 to 700 million won to buy that car (at the time). When I looked at it recently, it was around 200 million won. To be honest, if I had 200 million won for a used car, I would drive around the city all the time and go

For a ride every now and then. They say this is a dark history in the history of Hyundai Motorsports. Honestly, I don’t think there is such a thing as black history. Because there was a foundation for doing this in the past.

It would have been easy for Hyundai to participate in the rally again. You said it well. If you hadn’t been active at that time, The current high-performance N brand could not have existed. We are performing well (currently in the WRC). I think that’s what it all became based on.

Now I will show you the data I have. These are articles I’ve seen before. Wayne Bell was truly the cornerstone of modern motorsports. This person served as firewood and gradually developed… I really want to meet him and America’s Rod Millen sometime. Rod Millen said…hill climb scoop.

I managed that scoop when I was at the Ulsan research center. The scoop made by Rod Millen came to Korea after the game. He came and said it would be better to have this in the Ulsan research center. I took it to the driving test site.

Who is going to manage this? I told you to do it I raised my hand, me!!! So I always manage the car and drive it myself. It has been heavily modified. I rode it myself. There was a picture of me at this time too. Hey, even this photo…even the RAC (UK) rally.

Oh, there’s this picture too oh! Interesting I think I saw it, but it was here. I was also active in the Intercrew team at one time. I was competing with Park Jeong-ryong for 1st and 2nd place in the preliminary round. My car was scrapped and Park Jeong-ryong’s car was destroyed.

At that time, before I went to play overseas I worked on the Oil Bank team for a short time and specialized in off-roading. Oh, the data is really precious. Because there are so many familiar people When auto sports and auto magazines come into the library every month,

I’m always the first one to see it. I remember all the articles from back then when I see them now. As far as I know, these cars don’t exist in Namyang (research center), but this car wasn’t there… Maybe it’s at the Ulsan Hyundai Motor Museum?

I remember there were only two, the Scoop and the Wayne Bell Elantra that went out to Pikes Peak you mentioned. Can I see the photo you brought? Wayne Bell during the APRC. It looks like Indonesia or Malaysia. Back then, we wrote it as Hyundai Rally Sports.

How nervous would it be to be at the start here? You’re standing right at the starting line. When I close my eyes, I can hear my heart rate. The flag is lowered right in front (starting), so when that happens, I can’t express it in words… It’s better to leave early first.

It was hell before I left. It’s just time to start. At that point, you and the navigator will become one and you’ll be on your way. I get really, really nervous before doing it. The Hyundai Rally Sports Team was supported by Mabukri Research Institute… It’s a historical photo.

It’s probably a recky note made by Dave Boddy (co-driver). Normal people would read it as some kind of password. When people who know me see it, they think, ‘Oh, this is what it means.’ L, R, narrow, jump, etc. are all there. Wayne Bell gave me a gift.

He said he would give me the suit he was wearing. At that time, I wore it when riding F2… I’ll take just one shot Sometimes I wear this and go to the circuit now Even on track days, you go out there. That’s right, it’s written here, Wayne Bell.

I never thought I would see this in real life, anywhere else. Thank you so much for going the distance. It’s tingling thank you There were no spoilers when this was me. Because I bought the car as soon as it came out. Back then, whatever I got paid, I put everything on my car.

At that time, it was released as a black Tiburon. I touched on the cam, piston, high compression ratio, etc. I always used premium gasoline This clutch pressure plate… If you step on it to start quickly, it turns into a rock. Instead, it starts very well. When starting, the copper plate clutch.
