Conquering Zion National Park on a Motorcycle – EP. 281

How’s my hair? We’ve got a lovely day today. I’m on the run. My visa is expiring in four days, so I need to catch my flight out of the US. The plan is: I’m gonna park Chillie in Vegas and leave her for two months.

And then come back and hopefully, I’ll get a new entry visa permit to stay, and then I’ll get Chillie ready for South America, and then I’ll cross to Mexico. Hopefully in three months. Something like that. On my last days, I’m – I can’t see

Everything, but I’ll try to squeeze as much as I can. So my priority today is to see Zion National Park. But, I just discovered there’s this – Like, on the way, there’s this little canyon. The gravel road starts just there. It’s a small loop. Maybe four miles.

But it’s supposed to be scenic. So let’s do this, and then we’re gonna head to Zion National Park. Yes. That’s the plan. [Intro Music] This is the vibe. Goodness! This is so beautiful! Look at this rock formation! Wow! This is so cool. I’m glad I did a little detour. A little bit gravel. We have made it! We’re in! We’re in Zion National Park, officially. That was just the sign. This is the start. There will be probably a gate. Or maybe there won’t be. I don’t know. This is very – It starts very nice. Now we’re waiting in a line to get in.

There you go. Hello! Hello. How are you? Pretty good. And we’re in. So for the next maybe eight miles, we’ll be doing a lot of twisties. This is gonna be an epic ride, I reckon. Really, insanely beautiful. So normally, the entry to the park is like, 30 bucks for the motorcycle.

But if you have the pass, which is like, 80 dollars a year, it’s free. So it’s really worth having that pass. Especially I’ve been to so many national parks already. During this year. Okay! I’ll put the music on. Enjoy the scenery. Woohoo! We’re going through the tunnel! That’s a cool tunnel. A short one. And we’re on the other side. Busy! Suddenly it’s very busy. Ah! Look at this! Isn’t it insane? Absolutely epic, I reckon. I just had to stop. Hot. Why are we waiting? Come on. I’m not sure what’s going on. Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet? I’m frying here. Okay! We’re going into the tunnel. Maybe I should start Chillie. That would be nice. Ooh. This tunnel looks like it’s long! Yeah. Very long! Really long!

Aww, so pretty. Still in the tunnel. Oh my goodness. This is like, really… I can see the light. At the end of the tunnel. And we’re on the other side. There you go. Woo! This was cool. Whoa! Look at this! This is so cool. So now we’re gonna do like a few switchbacks. Nice twisties all the way down. I’m just standing here because everyone… Just too many cars. I wanna have a clear shot. Come on! Everyone. Get off the road. And we’re at the bottom. What a road! Whoa! This is what’s going on. He’s dumping. Oh, we’ll be here for a while. And off they go! Any moment now. Oh no, we have to follow the truck now. Chillie. That’s it. This is our view for now. Poo. Okay. So…

There is a road here, but as you can see, there’s like, a gate. And I’m pretty sure… That’s what I’ve heard. I don’t know, maybe I’m mistaken, but from what I’ve heard, you have to get tours to get there. So there’s like, a whole lot of other side of the park.

But I’m just gonna stick to this road. I mean, it was epic, wasn’t it? Like I mean, look at the background. So long, Zion. You were awesome. Yeah. I need to head back to Vegas because I’m on the run. We still have a nice scenery. And this is a highway to Vegas.

Very scenic as well. Look at it! I guess I’m going across three States today. I came up from Utah, this is Arizona, and then I’ll cross to Nevada. Soon. I got off the highway. Now I’m doing a little detour through the Valley of Fire.

So this is it. This is the Valley of Fire. Probably the colors during sunset or sunrise. I read. So far, that’s all I see. And my plan is to camp at Lake Mead. Lake Mead is this… Yeah. Lake. Not too far from Vegas. It is hot. It’s like, 35 degrees today. Celsius. But…

Yeah. I’ll just camp before I get to the Big Smoke. Because Vegas can be too intense, so I just need to decompress today. And we’ll head to Vegas tomorrow. Or maybe, hopefully, we’ll have a swim in the lake. But, yeah. Meanwhile, this is the Valley of Fire. Very nice ride. Hello! Hi!

How are you? You’re not a resident? No, I’m not. I’m planning to camp at Lake Mead. Okay. So it’ll be 15 to come through. Lake Mead is just past us. Yes. No worries. I can see this valley is on fire now. The rocks are very red. I’m just hoping

I have a little bit of shade at Lake Mead. Because yeah, it’s extremely hot at the moment. Still in September. We made it! This is Lake Mead. You can see from the far. Very nice blue color. And my campground is just… Here. Somewhere. I didn’t book a spot, so I’m actually just hoping for the best. That there will be a space for me. It is a national park, so.

Probably, I was supposed to book it online. So the scenario here is… Hold on. Maybe I’ll drive in first and then we’ll explain it. So this is a very nice spot because it’s all desert, desert, desert. But here, we have trees, so we have a bit of a shade.

So on the left, we have… Campground. And here on the right, we have an RV park. Humanity. I just accidentally formatted a card. On my camera on the helmet, so probably, you won’t be seeing the road to get to here. Or some of it. From the camera. So this is my –

When I arrived here, it was so hot. It was like, 35 degrees. 36. So, I managed to book online this campground. Luckily, we have reception here. My strategy here is: Tent is in the bushes. So, the sun is going down this way, so it will come up this way. So hopefully,

I will have some shade when I wake up. Chillie’s parked. On a proper concrete slab. And now, I just want to… Hold on, I’ll put you on the thing. Oh, you have no idea how exhausted I am. I am so exhausted. I’ve been like, for

Weeks, I’ve been just pack up and go, pack up and go, pack up and go, and I am absolutely… I’m done. That’s okay. In three days, I’m flying out. I’ll have a break, but for now, that will do for today. End of content. Good morning. Look. My campground is like,

All in the sun now. We’re literally frying here. It’s 36 degrees. So hot right now. Anyway, it’s time to head to Vegas. Before that, I’ll just show you the lake. Because we’re very close, but I didn’t show it to you because it was just like – Too tired yesterday to walk there.

Right-o Chillie, I think you’re ready. All right! Last day of riding for a while. We’re nearly there, Chillie. Then I will have a break. It’s a lovely campground, but yeah. It’s still very hot in September. And what I really love about it: It had gum trees! Gum trees!

They’re not native here, so clearly they were brought from Australia, I reckon. Let’s go with that. I’m not sure, but let’s go with that. There you go. This is beautiful Lake Mead. So apparently, this is the biggest man-made lake in the US.

So, I think they did it when they were building the Hoover Dam, which is close by. Past these mountains. During summer, I think there’s a lot of activities. People bring boats and that sort of stuff. It’s not – It’s only about twenty minutes from Vegas, so not too far. But it’s so beautiful, right? So you can come here for a swim, or a picnic. That sort of stuff. That’s it.

End of the tour of Lake Mead. We’re heading to Vegas. Well. I made a mistake. I told you we’re going to Vegas. We’re… Technically speaking, Chillie won’t be staying in Vegas. She’ll be here in Henderson. Henderson is just a town next to Vegas. I’m gonna leave her now at Forma Boots’ warehouse.

Vegas is just like, there. You see? In about like, there? You can see the Strip from here, so it’s very close. Chillie, we have made it. I’m so pleased. That’s it. This is us. Somewhere. I dunno. We have to put you in there.

All right! It’s time to rest now, but don’t you worry. I’ll be back next week, as usual. Everything will be under control. It’s just, I’ll bring my YouTube more up to date. Bye! [machine] Intercom failed. Try again later. [Outro Music]

The clock is ticking on my visa, but there was one last adventure I had squeezed in! Join me for a ride through the landscapes of Zion National Park. This is my last episode from the USA for some time. But not to worry – I’ll be back! 🙂

In April 2017 I left Australia for a solo trip around the world on a BMW F800GS. I named it “Are We There Yet” because I don’t know my final destination or the duration of this journey.

Throughout my journey, I’m raising money for a young disabled child in Poland named Franek. Franek was diagnosed with cerebral palsy (weakness of the entire right side of the body) and he will require constant rehabilitation for the rest of his life. All the money raised will go directly to helping Franek and his family lead as normal a life as possible so please donate generously: https://gogetfunding.com/arewethereyet/

None of that would be possible without my official sponsors:

  9. That gated part of the park just doesn't allow passenger vehicles. That is where some epic parts of the park are (hiking, wading through water, I know not your thing). So you can take a shuttle from the visitors center and get off and on as you please and do whatever hikes you like. I absolutely loved it

  10. Conquering Zion Kinga? What about Angels Landing and the Virgin River Narrows?… You didn't even point out the Virgin River for us when you went over it…DAH!
