Back to Tokyo. 24-hour ferry trip. Bonin islands, see you again! Hello! This is the Pat Inn hotel on Chichijima, Bonin islands. 10 minutes on the mountain road by motorcycle. 3:00 p.m. Ddparture from Futami Port. 24 hours in the Pacific Ocean. Arrives at Tokyo port at 3:00 p.m. The road brightened by the morning sun. Return to the hotel. I tour the island until the ferry departs. Heading south on the mountain road. The Kuroshio Maru has set sail for Hahajima.

Heading south from Asahidaira. Boardwalk to Mt. Asahiyama. Further south, Mt. Yoake. Lots of unfamiliar signs. Some goats. Goats are an invasive species. Unfortunately, the goats will be exterminated. Further south. National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, Ogasawara station. Radio telescope 20m in diameter. It is the largest structure on this island. Protected forest ecosystem.

Some routes require the accompaniment of a guide. A short walk from here. There are few public toilets on this island. Recycled by microorganisms. On the mountain road… an abandoned building. It’s an old Japanese military power plant. Two generator pedestals. Part of the building was destroyed in a U.S. air raid.

Further ahead, the sea. Hatsuneura Beach. One of the most beautiful beaches on this island. Remains here, too. It was an old Japanese military base. Trolley axle. And behind that… old army shelter. Facilities for ground warfare. Trolley rail tracks. Bonin islands were bombed many times. The only ground war was on Iwo Jima.

Many other battle scars. JAXA’s tracking station. Checking the status of the launched rocket. Radar equipment. Road to the Hatsuneura beach. About 50 minutes to the beach. Small but big island. Fence to keep goats and cats out. The highest peak on the island, Mt. Chuo. Altitude 319m. Some ferns endemic to Chichijima.

About 10 minutes to the summit. 360-degree view. Vast Pacific Ocean. Rest area. Radar pedestal of the old Japanese Army. It tells the story of 80 years. Here is the summit. Viewing platform. Let’s go up. Panel describes surrounding views. Very detailed. Distance to Okinawa, Minamitorishima and Guam. Futami Port is also visible.

Ogasawara Maru awaits departure. Southern Cross at night. Copepe beach. Named for Mr. Kopepe who once lived here. He is an immigrant from Micronesia. Sandy beach where sea turtles also lay their eggs. No one else. One boat offshore. Coral reef in the ocean. I seem to lose track of time. Lunch near Futami Port.

Some sea turtle food. Spacious interior. Island fish sashimi set meal, $10. Squid, horse mackerel, black carp. Motorcycle refueling. Gasoline is as expensive as $1.50 a liter. Returning the motorcycle. Electric bicycles available. 3 min. walk to Futami Port. Waiting area at the port. Reunited with Ogasawara Maru. 24 hours to Tokyo port.

Ropes and bollards. Let’s go back to the waiting area. Embarkation formalities are complete at the Tokyo port. Embarkation. The staff, the policemen, the islanders… Thanks for an enjoyable stay. To the 4th floor lobby of the ship. Passenger spaces are on the 2nd through 7th floors.

Outside decks are on the 6th through 8th floors. Staircase in center of ship. My cabin is on the 7th floor. I reserve a “Special room.” The fee is expensive, $690. This is the best private room on the ship. There are only four Special rooms. Looks like a very comfortable room.

I’ll take a closer look at the room later. Observation lounge “Hahajima.” From the lounge to the outside deck. Stairs to 8th floor. Lots of resting areas. Kuroshio Maru returning from Hahajima. Red and blue funnel. This is the 8th floor. Lots of benches. Radar tower and wheelhouse. 20 minutes before departure. Boarding continues.

Passengers come to the outside deck. Japanese drum performance to see off passengers. Wishing safe voyage and reunion. Applause and cheers. The long voyage begins. Sailing on time. Rope to the sea. Kuroshio Maru watches over us. On ship and land, They wave to each other. Many people see us off. Thank you, Bonin islands.

I want to come back to this island again. I’m sure everyone thinks so too. The ferry slowly takes off wharf. Steam whistle… I were only there for three days. But with all my heart, I fell in love with the islands. Seeing us off from the boats as well. Everyone’s waving to each other.

Children on the wharf. Dive and see you. Hordes of boats running alongside. Some of the boats I know. Offshore in the western sun. Beautiful sight. Every boat has its own thoughts. As the harbor gets further away, One by one, the boats stop. Arcing wake. Some people jump into the sea.

Only a few boats left alongside. I think it’s the last boat… another boat at a very high speed. Wow, it’s a Coast Guard boat! How cool they are! Thank you very much! This is really the last one boat. Feeling “after the festival.” Satisfaction and loneliness. Chichijima moves away.

Moving north along the Chichijima archipelago. Chichijima, Anijima, Ototojima and Magoshima. Squirting. Humpback whale. The whales also see us off. A pleasant surprise. That small island is Magoshima. Let’s go back inside the ship. The ship is quite bumpy. Let’s take a look at the cabin. One double bed. Comfortable sleeping.

And a cold water machine. Private lounge for Special rooms. Two massage chairs. Coffee and other drinks. All free of charge.

One hour after sailing. Hull bathed in the western sun. Brown booby. They dive into the sea to prey on fish. Almost to dusk. Back inside the ship. Take the elevator to the 4th floor. Lobby on the 4th floor. Information desk. Tropical fishes. Location of islands. 1000 km to Tokyo. Dusk.

Everyone watches the sunset. Clouds on the horizon. Slowly sinking. Sunset. Reddening sky. The ferry heads north. Moon through clouds. 4th floor lobby again. Rest space. Water heater available. 3rd and 2nd floors are all 2nd class. Still off-limits to outside deck. Then let’s take a look around inside the ship. There are three smoking rooms.

This room has a capacity of two. Kid’s room on 4th floor. Round window to sea. Toys in storage. Thick cushions on walls and floor. Luggage room is full. Mini salon “South Wind” on the 3rd floor. Atmosphere like a hideaway. Vending machines and microwave. Water heater and cold water machine available.

Vessels entering and leaving Tokyo Bay. A bulk carrier. A car carrier. Yokosuka cityscape. Heading north on Tokyo Bay. A Chinese cargo ship.

A fishing boat. Outside deck on 8th floor. Three flags on radar tower. Means “Sailing to Tokyo port.” Expected arrival time has passed. In and out of the lounge several times. It was a very relaxing space. Turning the corner of the corridor, private terrace for Special rooms. Tables and chairs.

Relaxing with a view of the sea. A sediment carrier. One of the former fortresses of Tokyo Bay. Steel mill and thermal power plant in Kimitsu. Streetscape of Yokohama. And Tokyo. Umihotaru,the rest area on the Tokyo Bay Aqua-line. That is the tunnel ventilation facility, “Tower of the winds” Passing offshore of Haneda Airport.

Airplane gaining altitude. Flying over. Is anyone watching this ship. Sun and aircraft. Funnel and aircraft. Sea and air travel intersect. Hazy Mt. Fuji. Another plane takes off. Tokyo Sky Tree can be seen. Container yard in operation. This is Daiba. The rainbow Bridge is approaching. Daiba and Shibaura are connected. 570m between main towers.

Pulls the hull in to the wharf. Boarding bridge. Throws a line from the ship. Line from the stern as well. Centrifugal force on… Throw! Catch it on the wharf. Pull the line. Rope connected to line. Rope to bollard. Looks like the line got snagged. Again from close range.

They support our voyage every day. 4:20 p.m. Arriving one hour and 20 minutes late. The long voyage is over. Let’s disembark. I was comfortable in this private room. A little expensive. But it was worth it. Disembarkation in order from the upper floors. Boarding bridge to terminal. Rooftop terrace of terminal.
