おなじみの番組テーマ曲「サンサーラ」を歌うのは、ヨルシカのボーカル・suis
愛知県・岡崎市の山の中に、小さな寺がある。
そこはかつて「平成の駆け込み寺」と呼ばれ、非行や虐待、いじめ、薬物依存など、様々な理由から親元で暮らせなくなった子供たちの「居場所」だった。今回の主人公は、その寺で壮絶な思春期を過ごしたショウとタクマ。
非行グループに属していたショウは、バイクの窃盗を繰り返し、１３歳にして少年鑑別所に送致される寸前だった。兄貴分のタクマもまた「九州の中学生ヤクザ」と異名を取るほどのワル。二人の出会いは１１年前、寺の住職である廣中邦充さんの元にショウが預けられた日にさかのぼる。
廣中さんは２０年間にわたり、問題を抱える子供たちを無償で預かり、更生に導いてきた。子供たちからは「おじさん」と呼ばれ「第二の父親」のような存在だ。おじさんや仲間たちから温かく迎えられ、ショウは少しずつ落ち着きを取り戻していくが、ある日事件が起きる…
一方、子供たちの精神的な支えであった廣中さんは、ステージ４の肺がんに侵され、その後、脳への転移が判明。病と闘いながら、最期まで子供たちに手を差し伸べ続ける。ショウとタクマ、そして熱血和尚と悩める子供たちの心の触れ合いを見つめた１１年間の映像記録。
