What Happened to the Magic Bus in Alaska? – EP. 259

What a beautiful scenery, right? [Intro Music] You really need your goggles now. Whoa! Full-on sandstorm in Alaska! How did that happen? We made it to Fairbanks. I had no idea this city is so… Our hostel is somewhere here! Any moment now. Oh! Maybe we can just drive in because we’re bikes. All right. We checked in. I’ll show you my – My cabin. This is us! Next to these bikes. I’m just gonna reverse.

There you go. Welcome, Kings. And that’s us. Very simple, but private. That will do. How’s my hair? Two days later, I’m out of this place. Honestly, for the last two days, I was just like, in my room working and sleeping because I was so exhausted. I really needed it. Um…

So now, what’s the plan? Well, the plan is to go to BMW to pick up my tires. Hopefully, they’re gonna change it for me. If not, I’m in trouble. Uh… And then, see Fairbanks because I didn’t see this town at all. And then… And then… And then, we’ll hit the road.

That’s the plan. This place was so cool. They have all sorts of options here. They have like, dorms in the tents, camp, cabins, all sorts of stuff. Okay. Let’s go, Chillie. New tires for you, buddy. Hopefully. If not, we’re gonna have to get them to Anchorage. See ya! All right.

Back on the road! But I feel so much better now after a rest day yesterday. This way? I guess so! And I guess BMW is… Ah! I think that’s it. I mean, it’s not just BMW. It’s like – They’ve got everything. And BMW. I think.

Or maybe I’m wrong. Maybe that’s not a dealer, but this – This is where I send my tires to. Early service. People are waiting! Apparently, yeah. Whoever gets first, get the service first. So they’re all travelers, I bet. Hello! Morning! Morning! You guys are waiting for the service?

Okay! So the procedure is: we have to wash Chillie first. Such a shame. She was so pretty when she was – All right, this is where we’re gonna be washing her. So here we are. Yup. This is Craig. [Craig] Here we are. Craig and I, we actually have been in touch for… Yes. A while ago. Via e-mail, and randomly, we met here. Craig is doing his service. Yup. Good luck to you, mate, because my tire change took six hours. [Craig] Thank you.

And wait. It cost… $410. Wow. The drums. [Drum Rimshot] Boom. Yes. The most expensive tire change I’ve ever done in my life. That’s okay. But we’re on the road. But it’s very late now. Yup. I’m still waiting for mine. Yup. We were here like, at eight AM, so. Yeah. All day. All day.

Yeah, it’s afternoon now. Anyway, it’s getting done. We will – [Craig] Anyway. Hopefully, you’ll get your bike today. Hopefully. Well, it’s getting pretty quiet around here, so… I know! You’re only the last one to collect. Right, okay. So I was planning to do Denali Highway.

I was going to do like a zigzag to Anchorage, which is the long way. But now I don’t have the time, and tomorrow, I have to be in Anchorage. And I’m unmotivated, so I’m just gonna go – Like this. Not today, but… I’ll get to Anchorage tomorrow.

It was nice to meet you, mate. Nice to meet you, too. It was so good to hang out. Actually, it was like a social – [Craig] Yeah. Right. It was a lot of people, yeah? [Craig] Who knows? It was like a good… Good day. Good day. Good day outdoors, yes.

Waiting for our bikes. [Craig] And it’s beautiful here. Yup. Plane. All right! All right. Safe travels. Safe travels. See ya. See ya. All right. Ready to go. Now we’re gonna go and see the museum. Quickly. And then

We’re out of here. And then go for as far as we can today, but it is late. It’s already, what? 2:30, and we haven’t left yet. Ooh. You’re heavy. I should be all right, eh? All right. Bye! It was nice to meet you! See ya! Good luck! See ya. Yeah. $410.

Because they’re charging 150 per hour. And they’re charging for a tire change. Two and a half hours. Yeah. To change two tires. Two and a half hours. And actually, I was there for six, but they charged me only for two and a half. Bargain. By the time they add tax, $410.

Anyway, it is what it is. I could do it myself, so I can’t be whinging. I hate changing tires. Before I go, I need to see one more thing. And it’s like, something super iconic, and a lot of you will know. Probably. What I’m talking about when I get this. Okay! We’re in!

We’re in an engineering building. I feel like I’m back – Back to uni. It’s even the right faculty! Engineering faculty. It’s been a while since I studied. That was so much effort to get here. But I’m glad I did.

So I’m not sure if you have seen the movie ‘Into the Wild’. If you haven’t, you have to watch it. It’s quite an um… Touching story. I don’t know how to say it. Yeah. You go through all sorts of emotions when you watch that movie.

But anyway, the story is about this guy who went into the wild. Left the society, went into the wild to remote Alaska and lived in this bus. And then he died. This bus was um…

There somewhere in the wild in Alaska, and they had to bring it here to the university because too many people were walking to the remote part and people had to be rescued. So now the bus – the original bus – is here. At the engineering faculty. I just had to see this bus. I was like, in such a hurry to get out of that shop that I forgot to tell you which tires I put on. So! Bridgestone Adventure Trail this time because I’ll be doing a lot of paved roads, and even if I do gravels, the gravels here are like –

You can do it on these tires. So – and they last a little bit longer. So that’s why I put on Bridgestone Adventure Trail. The way to go. Here we go, Alaska. Before we leave, I’m just gonna ride through downtown because I – I stayed here for two days. And yesterday, I was just so exhausted I spent all day in the room. Today I spent six hours on the sun, waiting for my tires to be changed. So I really don’t know Fairbanks.

So apparently, this is the – This is the city center. Okay. Let’s see what they have. It’s a big city, I must say. I thought it was a little bit smaller than this, but yeah. It’s a big city. We’ve got the flags. Maybe I’m not going even in the right –

I don’t know. We’re just gonna go through this street. Okay. I think this looks more like a city center. What do we have here? We’ve got that. And we’ve got that. Yup. I think that will do. We’re out of here. Whoa! It’s so windy here! So we’re nearly at Denali National Park.

There you go. The scenery is absolutely beautiful. But so windy! Woo! And it’s gusty wind, so it’s just like, this side, that side. This side, that side. I think we’re gonna stop somewhere here for the night. We have to find something. I’m done. I’m exhausted. And we’re in Denali National Park. Wow. Apparently very often, you don’t have good weather here. So, I guess I really can’t complain except for the wind. Poo. Except for the wind. And I’m in. This is a B&B. Super cute place. I’m pleased that I’ve found it because everywhere in the region, it’s very, very expensive. And I’ve got a room. I think it’s around $100. I still haven’t paid, but look at this. It’s just like – I think it’s someone’s house. We’re pretty much

In someone’s house. And this is my room. And Chillie’s somewhere outside. No. That’s somewhere else. Okay. Cool. That’s it! This is my room. It was a long day. Good morning. It’s raining. It’s gonna be a wet ride to Anchorage today. Maybe it will clear up down the road. Yuck. Roadworks. I don’t know if you see anything. It’s been raining heavily all the way. [Outro Music]

This episode is dedicated to ‘Into the Wild’ movie and book fans. I just had to see the legendary Magic Bus during my journey through Alaska. The bus is now in Fairbanks and there’s a really good reason for that! Oh, and let’s not forget about my traumatic experience with the tire change. Yep, this is Alaska!

In April 2017 I left Australia for a solo trip around the world on a BMW F800GS. I named it “Are We There Yet” because I don’t know my final destination or the duration of this journey.

Throughout my journey, I’m raising money for a young disabled child in Poland named Franek. Franek was diagnosed with cerebral palsy (weakness of the entire right side of the body) and he will require constant rehabilitation for the rest of his life. All the money raised will go directly to helping Franek and his family lead as normal a life as possible so please donate generously: https://gogetfunding.com/arewethereyet/

None of that would be possible without my official sponsors:

  1. I had the same tires for my Teneré. The bill for mounting in the Netherlands is € 435 tax included. Mounting and balancing was € 50. It are just expensive tires

  2. There are two groups of people with opinion on Christopher McCandless. Those who think he was a visionary and those who think he was a dumb F. I am in the second group. Shooting a bear with a .22 rim fire is not smart. The worst thing he could have traveled a couple of miles and there was a cable basket river crossing of the river. No I will eat unknown mushrooms and die.

  3. Hey Kings, happy New Year to you!!!
Can I make a suggestion ? I've been watching you for some years now, and it struck me I would love to have a full length DVD to watch, probably a series of DVDs, Australia, The stans, Europe, Africa, etc. os this something your editor could do for you? I can't be the only.one who would buy them

  4. That bus is being restored by my friend Eric who is the head of the engineering department at UAF super cool guy in the summer he's commercial fisherman in SE Alaska

  5. Great to see that you put new tyres on, the ones you had were "a bit" worn out with all the travelling. Next port of call is to arrange a FULL service for Chillie, preferably not by a rip off Harley Davidson dealership

  6. People come to Alaska and think they can treat an adventure here like they're in the Lower 48. The bus guy was no hero. He didn't do his research, wandered off into the muskeg and eventually convinced himself that there was no way out.

  7. God, Alaska is beautiful! It's just beautiful views around every single corner, you're so blessed to have ridden through there on those wide, empty roads! How wonderful!
