Izu Oshima adventure: Solo female cyclist’s journey 🚲 Mesmerizing sunsets, nights, and island vistas

Good evening, I am currently at Hamamatsucho Station North Exit. Oh, Tokyo Tower is illuminated in Christmas colors Walking away from Tokyo Tower, you will arrive at Takeshiba Pier, the starting point of today’s trip. From there, let’s go to an island in Tokyo! Takeshiba Pier is the gateway to the islands of Tokyo.

I signed up for a somewhat unique tour today but still don’t know the destination. This tour is a mystery tour to one of Tokyo’s five islands, where you’ll discover your destination upon ticket exchange😁

But if it turns out to be the farthest island, its stay time becomes only 30 min.😅Where will it be? Thank goodness our destination for the trip was fixed on Oshima, the nearest island! This tour is priced at only 4000 yen (≒$28.28)!

Normally a second-class ship to Oshima costs about 5,000 to 6,000 yen one way, so this tour is an excellent deal! (Fares vary depending on the season.) Kon-banwa😁Good evening! Now, let’s board the ship, Sarubia Maru!

They say the amazing thing about this ship is that it can go right sideways when it leaves the shore. Now, let’s enjoy the spectacular night view of Tokyo Bay together! The Rainbow Bridge, Tokyo’s iconic symbol connecting Odaiba and Shibaura, is a suspension bridge spanning about 800m.

This bridge has an upper deck for the expressway, a lower deck for general traffic and monorail tracks, and a pedestrian walkway. One of the charms of this journey is the opportunity to enjoy this beautiful night view. Well, it’s time to look at the cabins I’ll be staying in today!

Today we’re on a budget-friendly tour, so my cabin is in the cheapest 2nd class! What’s it like? Well, it looks like my seat is behind this curtain.

Hmmm, it looks like a Nobi-nobi seat on the Sunrise train and, this room is for women only, so female solo travelers can stay here without any worries! Put your valuables in here. Oh, I have to borrow a blanket! Blankets are not included in the price. This ship, Sarubia Maru, has six floors.

This is a blanket exchange ticket vending machine. Purchase the ticket here for 100 yen (≒$0.71) each, and exchange it for a blanket at the information desk. There are also various vending machines on the ship. I’m a little hungry, so I’m going to eat a cup of ramen as a midnight snack.😁Hehe.

Cup Noodle Seafood Flavor ¥270 (≒$1.91)🍤 The vending machine also provides hot water.👍 This is the information desk. You can get your blankets here. Oh, it’s a character from the Spy Family! Good night, Anya! I ended up borrowing six blankets. You can borrow as many blankets as you want.😁

Good morning. It’s just before 6 AM and we are almost at Oshima! There are two large ports in Oshima, and depending on the weather, the ship arrives at one of them. Today, we have arrived at Okata Port and we will move to Motomachi Port by bus.

It takes about 20 minutes by bus from Okata Port to Motomachi Port The town center of Oshima is here in Motomachi. Beautiful morning glow. On a clear day, you can see something quite well from here. That something is none other than Mount Fuji!

Not only Mt. Fuji but also the mountains of Izu Peninsula can be seen clearly. Just seeing this view was worth coming here!🥰 Well, I was hungry, so let’s have breakfast! There is a restaurant here that opens at 6:30 a.m.!

But the owner of this restaurant seemed a little grumpy (probably because he was busy), so if you are worried about it, you can also have breakfast early in the morning at another place called Gojinka Onsen. But the grilled fish at this restaurant was plump and very tasty!

Thank you for providing breakfast so early in the morning. Thanks to that, I managed to avoid starving!🙏 Now that I’ve had my breakfast and I’m energized, let’s rent a bicycle! I decided to rent a regular bike for the day. 1500 yen (≒$10.56) Bicycle-san, let’s have fun together today!

Mmmm, it’s uphill from the beginning! Now, let’s head to the south side of the island. Many of the roads on Oshima run along the ocean, so it’s nice to ride a bicycle on them. Thanks for the directions, Google-san! I think it’s a left turn around here.

The bike rental staff says you don’t have to lock your bike on Oshima because no one steals bicycles! We have arrived at our first destination, Omiya Shrine. Passing through the first torii gate Then, we pass through the second torii gate. A flower of Oshima camellia,

Beyond the third torii gate, huge trees, mainly vertebrae, are thriving, creating a sacred atmosphere. These huge trees are home to monkeys! Kon-nichiwa, Osaru-san (monkey) ! How are you? These vertebrate trees are designated as natural monuments by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.

Some trees are over 30 meters high with a trunk circumference of about 7 meters. The monkeys have a magnificent home! This is the fourth Torii gate, and the shrine has a mysterious atmosphere that changes with each gate you pass through!

Here, in contrast to the large trees, there are several small shrines. Could they be the homes of little spirits? It was a charming shrine with a story-like atmosphere. It felt as if I stepped into a story. Monkey-san, I’ll revisit you! What can we see next? A lighthouse in the middle of the road?

There seems to be a beach ahead, let’s go there! I can see the beach ‘O-nohama’ now. In Japanese, it means the king’s beach. I heard that Mt. Fuji can be seen beautifully from here on a clear day, but unfortunately, it is currently covered with clouds.

This beach is also famous for sea turtles! Swimming with them would be amazing! Now, let’s head to the north side of the island. This is Sunset Palm Line, a bike path with a spectacular view! Oshima is a volcanic island, and this is solidified lava from 3,400 years ago.

The plants in Oshima are doing their best to survive the harsh conditions. The Izu Peninsula can be seen from here. And just beyond the northern edge of the island, is Oshima’s town-run ranch. HI😁Cow-san, how are you doing? I pedaled hard on my bicycle to taste your delicious milk.

Here you can enjoy tasty ice cream made with delicious milk! A single scoop of ice cream is 350 yen (≒$2.47). I wonder which flavor to choose. Wow, there’s camellia flower jam ice cream.😍 Lovely ice cream!😍I wonder what the petals taste like?

I’ve never had ice cream with flower petals in it before. That’s a wonderful idea.👍 Delicious with a strong milk flavor😋 Wow, the front of this store is an airport! From here, airplanes fly to Chofu Airport in Tokyo and Izu islands.

The bike path in Oshima was more hilly than I expected, so I’m sure I’ll have sore muscles tomorrow!😅 Next time I rent a bicycle, it would be better to rent an electric bicycle! Mt. Mihara on the left is the symbolic volcano of Oshima.

You can also cycle to Mt. Mihara, but it seems to be for advanced riders as there are many uphill slopes. I might give it a try after some training next time.😁 Because I would love to meet Mihara-san, the creator of this lava! Now that I’ve cycled a lot, I’m really hungry!

The restaurant where Godzilla welcomes you is called ‘Sushi Kou.’ Let’s eat Oshima’s local specialties here.😋 Kon-nichiwa😊 I ordered a shimadon, which is said to be very popular (a seafood bowl with recommended fish from Oshima).2000 yen (≒$14.09) The soup is very tasty with fish broth.

The restaurant’s name is stamped on the eggs. They are fluffy and delicious. This is the island’s specialty, Bekkou Sushi (Tortoiseshell suhi). It features seasonal white-fleshed fish marinated in a special soy sauce with chili peppers. Each piece of sashimi is very large!😋

I especially loved the restaurant’s special soy sauce, which is a slightly sweet soy sauce with hot chili peppers!👍👍 Not only was the food delicious, but the restaurant staff was hospitable. I’ll definitely be back. Thank you. 😁 I bought soy sauce as a souvenir! Hehe😉

Now, it’s almost time for the ship to return to Tokyo! It looks like the return ship will be leaving from Okata Port as well! Don’t forget to check Tokai Kisen’s website to see which port the ship departs from. How was our trip to Oshima, an island in Tokyo?

Our stay in Oshima lasted for about 8.5 hours, but it was not enough time at all! Next time, let’s reserve a lodging and come explore Mt. Mihara together!😉 Thanks for coming to pick me up, Sarubia Maru-san😁 Goodbye Oshima, I will be back😎 The ship is scheduled to arrive in Tokyo at 7:00 p.m.

The ship will sail slowly between Kanagawa and Chiba Let’s enjoy the sunset and night view together! Thank you for watching until the end!😍 If you like the Atsuko tour, please subscribe to my channel, hit the like button, and leave a comment 😘

If you do so, I’ll be delighted, and I might jump higher than Mt.Mihara 🦘🤣 Oi Container Terminals Rainbow Bridge is in sight, and we’re almost at Takeshiba Pier! I post videos that are useful for your travels in Japan, so please check them out when you have the chance.

Where shall we go together next? Please look forward to my next video. 🤗Until then have a lovely day and stay safe😁

I joined a mystery tour with Tokai Kisen (Shipping company) to Izu Oshima, an island in Tokyo!
Izu Oshima, the largest of the Izu Islands, is situated 120 km south of central Tokyo in the ocean. At the island’s heart is Mt. Mihara, standing at 758 m above sea level and remaining volcanically active. This stunning island, abundant in nature, offers hot springs, cycling, and mountain climbing experiences making it hard to believe you’re still in Tokyo!
This Mystery Tour is a special off-season promotion available until January 24th (with a price increase to 5,000 yen in January).
If you go to Oshima, the one-way trip costs more than 5,000 yen, so this tour is very economical!
(Although we are not sure which island you can go to…)
In addition to this, Tokai Kisen arranges various tours to Tokyo’s islands, so if you’re keen on island exploration, do check out their website.
While I opted for the night ferry, you can reach Oshima in just 1 hour and 45 minutes by high-speed boat from Tokyo if you have money to spare, so be sure to consider including Oshima in your itinerary!

  1. 自転車で敦子さんの旅行 👏

This looked like a fun and exhausting adventure, who would have though there was so many climbs on the coast 😅. But it was worth it for sure ! 富士山 looks great as usual 🤘. I also particularly liked 大宮神社 (コンニチワ 木霊さん !)

またありがとう敦子さん。You will soon make us visit everything in Japan we won't have to move haha 😁 (just kidding ofc we will come to see it with our own eyes ! And to eat 😋)

  2. Wow! The views were GORGEOUS! Like picture postcards!
It has always amazed me that Tokyo also includes islands out in the ocean. People tend to forget that, and think it's only on Honshu. And like the lakes, mountains, and forests in Tokyo 'proper', this stunning place you brought us along on, amazes, and then dispels the stereotype of what Tokyo is like. This very economical trip is a great way to see the beauty of Japan!
Thank you so much for posting these videos for us, Atsuko san!

  3. Hello. Thanks for the great video. It was very interesting to watch your adventures. I liked Omiya temple the most. Its territory looks like the scenery for some movie. And little Godzilla, one love.
I recently learned that there was an earthquake in Japan.😭 I hope everything is fine with you and your loved ones.🙏 Take care of yourself and nature.

  4. Wow, I'm totally hooked on this Izu Oshima adventure! 🚲 Your solo journey Atsuko-san is seriously giving me all the wanderlust feels. I wanna travel again soon! Those sunsets, the nights on the road, and the island views are absolutely mesmerizing!

  5. The device that allows a large ship to move sideways when maneuvering is called a Bow Thruster. It provides a sideways thrust near the bow, or front end of a ship that moves the bow laterally. Some ships even have a Stern Thruster that provides a sideways thrust near the stern, or the back end of a ship. Most ships don't have a stern thruster, but putting the rudder hard over with a low speed on the propeller also causes the stern of the ship to move laterally. So, the bow thruster working with the rudder and propeller allows a ship to move sideways. Google "Bow Thruster" and you will better understand what it is. By the way, I know a little bit about such things because I'm a retired ship designer and marine engineer.

Yes, the night views on the water are beautiful. I believe I made a comment about recommending a dinner voyage on board a Yakatabune. In addition, I find Toyosu and Koto-Ku to be new and interesting areas of Tokyo. Speaking of Toyosu Market, a new three story Edo-inspired market (restaurants and shops) and nine story hotel/spa opened today (01 February) adjacent to the market. Its name is Toyosu Senkyaku Banrai (Toyosu thousand guests continuously arriving). It's an attempt to lure more people and tourists to Toyosu Market like the outer market at Tsukiji. Check it out.

I believe I also made a comment about someday wanting to take a trip to the Ogasawara Islands someday. That ship also departs from the Takeshiba Terminal. You had mentioned you might get seasick on such a voyage.
