Discover the breathtaking Onomichi Channel in Hiroshima, Japan Onomichi is a port town located in southeastern Hiroshima Prefecture. and has been recognized as a “Japanese Heritage” as a “Miniature Garden-like City”. The Onomichi Channel, which separates Mukaishima Island from the mainland where the city is located, extends from east to west.

Onomichi has thrived as a distribution center for maritime transport since ancient times. In this video, we would like to introduce a superb walking course along the coast of Onomichi! Onomichi City Office Observation Deck Onomichi is the starting point of the “Shimanami Kaido” on the Honshu side.

There are two bridges, the “Shin-Onomichi Ohashi” and the “Onomichi Ohashi”, spanning the Onomichi Channel. Onomichi City Office will be renovated and reopened in 2020. The area around the building has been developed as a wooden observation deck. It is truly a city office facing the sea!

There is also a bench on a one-step higher veranda where you can look out over the ocean! Onomichi City Office is the starting point of a promenade that stretches for about 2km! Let’s go inside City Office for a moment!

The main city office building is open to the public on holidays and at night, and anyone is welcome to visit! After a while, you will see the “ONOMICHI” logo monument! It is a new photo spot in Onomichi! There is also an observation deck on the rooftop, accessible by elevator.

There are several anime that take place in Onomichi, making it a mecca for fans. Leaving Onomichi City Office behind, we will continue westward. For access, the adjacent “City Office Building Parking Lot” is convenient. It is a pay-by-the-hour parking lot, but it can also be used for sightseeing purposes.

It is also close to the foot station of Senkoji Ropeway. At first glance, Onomichi Channel looks like a river. It is a strait in the Seto Inland Sea, and Mukaishima Island can be seen on the opposite shore. There are many piers and jetties like this one along the Onomichi Channel.

They are one of the main attractions when strolling along the seashore. The next thing you see is a group of port facilities. Warehouses and vessels of shipping companies are moored here, and the view is typical of a port town. There is also a bicycle rental store.

A small shrine can be seen in the foreground. Sumiyoshi Shrine Sumiyoshi Shrine is believed to be the guardian deity of Onomichi’s port. Onomichi Central Visitor Pier (Onomichi Sea Station) Onomichi Central Visitor Pier” is located behind Sumiyoshi Shrine.

It is a “marine parking lot” for yachts and other vessels coming to Onomichi from the sea. Houseboats and Onomichi Maritime Institute training boats are also moored here. From here, a tile-paved promenade continues. Small boats and pleasure boats are moored out to sea.

And then, a boat departs from the pier in front of us. This is a ferry that connects Honshu and Mukaishima, a tradition on the Onomichi Channel! Because of the ocean currents, the boats take a unique route that seems to be drifting! This is the ferry terminal.

Not only cars, but also pedestrians and bicycles are allowed to board the boat. Continue along the coastal promenade to the west. There is a bench on the jetty, which can be used as a resting spot! Looking back in the direction we came from, we can see the ferry returning to the pier.

The boat is now turning back to Mukaishima on the other side of the island and setting sail. The ferry runs continuously without a break. Boarding time is about 5 minutes each way, and passengers are almost never interrupted.

Even if you miss the boat, the next one will come soon after you wait for a while. Looking at the other side (west side) of the jetty, another ferry can be seen. Actually, there are three ferry routes on the Onomichi Channel.

You can choose the route depending on your destination and the means of transportation, such as by car or on foot. There is a passage further inside (on the ocean side) of the embankment and promenade. Another jetty comes into view.

These jetties are one of the best vantage points from which to view the Onomichi Channel. There are benches, tables, and other resting spots here and there. After a while, the ferry pier comes into view again. Fukumoto Ferry Pier The ferry has just returned from Mukaishima to the pier on the Honshu side.

Another ferry is sailing in the back. This ferry is quite large and can accommodate passenger cars and trucks. After loading the waiting cars, the ferry immediately turns around and departs. This is an everyday scene on the Onomichi Channel. Vessels other than ferryboats come and go frequently on the Onomichi Channel.

Just walking along the shoreline, you can see many different types of boats. Leaving the ferry pier, we continue to the west. After a while, visitors will come to a wide walkway with a wooden deck. There are many benches and a grassy area.

Mukaishima Island on the other side of the river is lined with shipyard cranes and docks. Onomichi is famous as one of the leading shipbuilding cities in Japan. The station building of “JR Onomichi Station” can be seen on the right! This is the gateway to Onomichi and the center of transportation access!

“Onomichi Station Square” has been developed along the coast. The Onomichi Waterfront Building and pier can be seen in the foreground. This is the pier for the third ferry connecting Honshu and Mukaishima. *Don’t miss the boat ride in the second part of the video! Onomichi Station Pier

Go around to the back of the complex where there are hotels and restaurants… You will reach “Onomichi Station Pier”, the hub port of Onomichi. From this pier, you can access to Momoshima Island, Innoshima Island, and Ikuchijima Island by boat. Sightseeing boats such as “Onomichi Channel Cruise” are also docked here.

The “Lazuli” is a unique bicycle-shaped cycle ship. It is a high-speed boat that connects Innoshima and Ikuchishima, where the “Shimanami Kaido” passes, with Onomichi. It is a popular ship for cyclists with ample space for storing bicycles. Adjacent to the pier is the vast “Onomichi Station Port Parking Lot

It is an excellent location for sightseeing in Onomichi. There is also a bike rental station in the parking lot. The parking lot is also a convenient starting point for Shimanami Kaido cycling. This two-story parking lot can accommodate over 200 vehicles, making it the largest in Onomichi. ONOMICHI U2

“ONOMICHI U2” is located at the back of the parking lot. It is a tourist complex renovated from a shipping warehouse. Global bicycle brand “Giant” store General merchandise store based on the concept of everyday life in Setouchi Cafes and restaurants where you can enjoy foods from the Setouchi area

“HOTEL CYCLE” where you can check in with your bicycle You can experience the charm of the “Shimanami Kaido”. The ocean side (south side) of ONOMICHI U2 is an open deck There are many benches, making it a great place to take a break while strolling around.

A large ship is docked here this time, but you can usually see the Onomichi Channel from the deck. At the back of ONOMICHI U2, there is an active shipping warehouse “Shed No. 3”. Incidentally, “U2” is an acronym for “No. 2 Shed”.

The Onomichi Station Port Parking Lot was built on the site of Shed No. 1. The exterior looks just like U2. A barge is moored at the quay of the warehouse. Barges are auxiliary vessels used for marine transportation of materials and heavy cargo.

This is the goal of the 2-km promenade leading from Onomichi City Office. The return trip will be introduced in the second part of the video, but you can also board a ferry on the Onomichi Channel and You can enjoy various boats on the Onomichi Channel, so don’t miss it!

◇ONOMICHI U2
