AOS in Kazakhstan, and we stayed last night in  Hotel Khah in town. And it’s absolutely crazy   because we were just eating dinner at a restaurant  last night in town. Yes, now we’re talking. Oh,   we thought we would treat ourselves after a crazy  horrible day on the road yesterday. And then we  

Started chatting to this couple from Mati and the  guy Giman at the end when he was going to leave,   he just said to us guys, “I’m going to pay for  your hotel tonight in town. If you go to Hotel KH,  

Just give them your name and you guys are going  to have a free night at the hotel.” We were   just blown away. I mean, that generosity, that is  absolutely unbelievable. It’s just incredibly nice   because I don’t know if you have noticed, normally  we always go for the cheapest room in town. It’s  

Not very often that we get a hotel room with  two different rooms, a bedroom and like a whole   living room. It was like a whole apartment for us.  Yeah, it was so nice. It was so nice. So today,  

We are praying for a better day than yesterday  because yesterday was one of the hardest rides   we’ve ever [Music] done. Okay, I got to slow down  again. I almost just want to jump off and walk.   Oh, oh my God, please, Bumblebee survived. Not  only was the road absolutely terrible, but our  

Rear shock, all the oil’s gone out, all the gas  has gone out, and we’re just bouncing around on   our spring. And then add that to a fractured  rib that I got in Mongolia. We fell over,   and basically, you have the ingredients for a very  horrible day. Google estimated it would take us 5  

Hours yesterday to reach this town, and in the  end, we were on the bike over 9 hours. I think   our average speed for the day was something like  15 to 20 M an hour. Yeah, so we’re hoping for a  

Better road today. So let me show you guys the  route for today. So we now have our shiny new   map of Kazakhstan, and it is massive. And we are  here. And today, we’re going to be taking this  

Road south towards Lake Alakol and then continuing  on this road towards the city of Almaty. Since we   arrived in Kazakhstan, every person we spoke  to is like, “You have to visit Lake Alor Al.”   So that is where we’re going to try and get to  today. But it’s really going to be dependent on  

The road conditions. Google is estimating 5 hours  to get there, but it is a little bit of a detour   on our way to Almaty. And if the road is really  bad, we might just give up that detour and just  

Continue on to Almaty. Yes, because in Almaty,  the plan is to fix up Bumblebee completely,   to get a new shock, to get a new service done  that we will be able to do detours like this   in the future. You know, because, of course,  this is what’s traveling all about, to visit  

Amazing places. But at the moment, I’m just go,  go, go. Let’s go to Almaty. Let’s get it done that   we can then enjoy it because I really don’t want  Bumblebee to break down between here and Almaty.  

Almaty is the biggest city in Kazakhstan, so  that’s where we’re going to be trying to get kind   of everything done. We’re still in the process  of organizing a shock with Motorcycle World back   in my hometown Northampton, the dealership which  actually gave us our beautiful Bumblebee in the  

First place while these guys are sending a new  shock out to us. Thank you so much, guys. We just   got to get there, basically. We’ve just got to get  there in one piece. Exactly. It’s already 12:15,  

So better hit the road. Let’s go. Oh my God, the  road already gets quite pump here. Oh yeah, great   start to the day. First of all, we’ve basically  lost the tarmac. Second of all, we have a lot of  

Trucks on this road. Yeah, come on road. You know  what? At least I had a really, really nice rest in   this amazing air-conditioned room. So I feel that  we can tackle another bad road today. I feel like  

That now, but let’s see in 5 hours. Hey, I think  I remember that one of the guys yesterday said   the first 150 K are bad and then it gets better.  Go through this, and you will reach the promised  

Land. Please get better. Oh look, hey, hey. So  that was the end of that nice road. Woo. Yep,   this is going to be some kind of day. Oh my Lord.  Oh my [Music] God. Ooh. Ooh. [Music]. Yes. Well,  

That didn’t last very long, did it? I just can’t  believe that this is the main road here. Look   at it. Really, worst road condition I think we  have seen so far. I mean, look what people have   to deal with, trucks, cars, motorbikes. Look at  it. Our suspension is just bouncing around like  

Madness. Absolutely madness here. Yeah, we did  make really good progress in our first hour. We   did 25 mi in our first hour. It’s not too great,  hey. It’s not too great. I just feel sorry for  

All the people who have to take this road here  all the time, you know. Like I said, it is the   main road. It is the only road connecting Almaty  with Samy. Well, I’m just praying that a little  

Bit further down the line, the road is finished.  Oh man, all the rest of the way to Almaty, please,   please. Yes. Oh my God, another good section.  Let’s do it. No. Yay. Oh my God, it’s going to  

Be like this the whole day. Oh no, he has a flat.  Yeah, poor [Music] guy. The second truck we see   with a flat tire. Yeah, I bet the Kazakhstan  people are just waiting for this new road to  

Be finished all the way. I tell you. I’m waiting  for this new road. Yeah, absolutely nothing here.   Yeah, absolutely nothing. But the odd horse,  and they’re cute. Yeah, they’re nice. Yes,   another good section of road. And whilst we’re on  a good section of road, I’m going to tell you guys  

A little bit more about country number 26 on our  journey around the world. Kazakhstan. Kazakhstan   is massive. It is the largest landlocked country  in the world. And it’s actually the ninth largest   country in the world by area. And it’s funny  because there’s only 19 million people here,  

And that makes it less than six people per  square kilometer. So it’s one of the least   densely populated countries in the world. The  territory, which is now Kazakhstan, has been   inhabited and occupied by many, many different  nomadic peoples over the years, including as  

Part of the Turkic Empire and most famously part  of the Mongol Empire. But after the breakdown of   the Golden Horde in the 15th century, this became  the Kazakh Khanate. Then later, it became part of   the Russian Empire in the 18th century and then  part of the Soviet Union up until 1991. So modern  

Kazakhstan dominates Central Asia economically  and politically. It actually provides 60% of the   GDP of all Central Asia, but most of that is from  oil and gas. And it’s really interesting with the   name Kazakhstan because the word Kazak actually  comes from the ancient Turkic meaning to wander.  

And it’s actually the same route where the Russian  keks come from. So keks, Kazaks, they both mean   wander. So Kazakhstan literally means the land of  The Wanderers. Another really interesting thing   is that when I was reading about Kazakhstan,  it was saying that the Kazakhstan Bandy team  

Is apparently one of the best in the world. And I  was like, “Oh, that’s cool.” And then I was like,   “What is Bandy?” Apparently, Bandy is basically  like a different version of ice hockey that’s   played by Russia. And yeah, Kazakhstan are one  of the best Bandy teams in the world. I also read  

That Kazakhstan is really good at boxing as well.  So in the last Olympic Games, Kazakhstan got the   most amount of medals for boxing apart from Russia  and Cuba. So pretty good boxers as well. Yeah,   don’t mess around with the Kazakh. I can’t believe  that the road remained good enough for me to tell  

You guys about Kazakhstan. I’m really happy.  Thumbs up. Actually, I’ve got a feeling that it   might be good all the way to Almaty. Look how many  crickets there are here on the side of the road. I  

Don’t know if I can see it on camera [Music] whoa.  Okay, so we’ve reached the Junction now where the   lake Alakol is this way, and our final destination  Almaty is this way. And we just routed it,  

And it’s actually 42 mi in the wrong direction  to go to this Lake. But look at this, guys. Let   me just point out something to you. Look at that.  That’s a rock. Hey, that is a rock there, a big  

One over there as well. It looks like this road  is under construction but not far enough under   construction. 42 mi that way and then 42 mi back  is just a detour that we can’t take at the moment.  

So we’ve decided we’re going to have to skip Lake  Alakol. If we head 1 hour towards Almaty today,   we might even be able to get there tomorrow, which  is a really inviting prospect because there we’ve   got a long break waiting. We’ve got Bumblebee’s  fix waiting. And yeah, we just need to get there.  

I mean, it would have been nice to see the lake,  but in my mind, I was like if it’s just 10 miles,   okay, maybe I can push through it, but knowing  it’s 40 miles, if the road is really bad,  

We could be on this road for another 2 hours. We  had a hard time already over the last 2 days. Hey,   yeah, I think I would cry. I think I would cry.  No, I’ve been suffering so much for the last two  

Days. Yeah, it’s like there’s a limit. So anyway,  we are now going to be heading in this direction,   the direction of Almaty. We’re going to ride  an hour more, and then we’ll look for a place   to stay. And then, yeah, maybe we get there  tomorrow. Yes, let’s do it. I think we made  

The right decision to continue. Look at this road.  It is absolutely pristine. Oh, and it just feels   amazing to be flying along. It’s just amazing.  And we’ve hit some mountains.
